This is a scorpion as found at night in the dunes of Glamis, CA. He was found at night with the aid of an infrared light which my buddy has. By the way, he gets the credit for the picture since I'm sure he is the one that took the picture while I posed the scorpion. I do not have any pictures of the scorpion in the day since I did not keep it. They were found at nearly every bush around camp at night time. Most of them sat just outside of their burrows. Does anyone know what species it is? I'll try to take some day shots this year to aid in identification. I'm hoping the experts might know based on location and general body morphology. Thanks!

If I had to guess I'd say S. mesaensis, or H. arizonensis pallidus due to the stripe on its back and coloration. I'm not sure it's H. arizonensis pallidus because of the thickness of the tail. Desert Hairies are known for their thick tails. Also, I think S. mesaensis is more likely to be found in that area than H. arizonensis pallidus. I would get a second opinion, but I'm pretty sure it's S. mesaensis.

And I just saw that you mentioned dunes. S. mesaensis's common name is Dune Scorpion.

I have 2 of these, and they're really great pets. If you can collect some, go for it. I wish I had more room, or I'd bribe you to ship me a few :D

Also- these can not be kept in groups

Wow, thanks for all of the info. S. mesaensis sounds like a good be to me too. I'll keep one for day time photographs next time. I may just have to keep a couple for myself as well. They seem to be everywhere to the dismay of fellow campers. LOL. I love it though.
Last year I saw a big mother inside of a huge rodent burrow. He seemed to be four to five times as big as the others. I tried to get him out but he would have none of it. He scurried into the nether regions of the burrow before I had a chance to reach him. I'd say that one may have been H. arizonensis pallidus. That was the only big one I saw. More pictures to come this desert season.
