As I've become more and more involved with tarantulas I've learned most of the scientific names, but I feel that I may be butchering the pronunciation on some of the names. I was wondering whether or not there is a guide on the internet on how to pronounce all the different genus and species names? I've looked around a bit, but have only been able to find a pronunciation key for one or two species. Thanks for any help guys!

I have a website for practicing Spanish and have a lot of experience creating online quizzes and practices. I'd be willing to create something with sound files and spelling family names if someone who really knows the pronunciation wants to make sound files. Here is an example from my webpage, made 100% by me. (Except my wife made did the talking.)

i'll tell you, it is pretty fun and funny when you get a big group of bug ppl together... the scientific names present amusing trouble to pretty much all of us. i have had to spell stuff for ppl to get them to know what i mean, cuz our pronunciations were so different :)

a lot of the ancient latin original pronunciations are lost to modern times, but there is a pretty solid understanding

greek is a little better, cuz it is a living language... but i read that there is still a bit of confusion cuz the words used in species names are classical greek which is like, not exactly the greek spoken today

and then a lot of names are ppl and places from other languages and that complicates things too :)

really, most ppl are pretty cool when it comes down to it, and we all just slog through as best we can, heh

The common one's that seem to confuse a lot of people are smithi and blondi. I've heard respected bug people pronounce them smithee, smitheye, blondee and blondeye! :D

Uh...

smithi (SMITH-ee)

Sounds like your 'smithee' to me, which is correct.
