Scented items in/near Tarantula room

Hi all, still learning here and recently read that scented and aerosol items could be a problem for the T's. I'll remove my perfume (the room is also our 2nd bedroom which we use as a dressing room) and we are going to buy a door sweep for the door. Will that help?

Would it then be enough to then shut the door and still use these items in adjoining rooms?

Wet Swiffer pads on floors
Glade freshener plug ins
scented candles
hairspray (I plan to shut the bathroom door as well as have the T room shut and the bathroom fan on, will this help?)
Pledge or multi-purpose spray for cleaning

Our bedrooms are small and clustered together in the back of the house. Would the AC unit be pulling this stuff into their room?
Previously all the critters lived in the basement but we recently brought them upstairs to see them more often. Thank you for your input.

I think you're worrying about this more than is needed. Don't use any toxic substances immediately around the tarantulas and you should be just fine.

Plenty of people have smoked in their tarantula rooms and I don't recall seeing any mass panic over those chemicals in the air. I could be horribly out of date though.

Thank you for the replies! It's great having the critters closer to us, it seems so common sense now not to use the items in their immediate area, but I just hadn't thought about it before. We just moved them a couple of weekends ago.

I have used the plug-in scent ports for years in the room where my T,s are.
Never had any health issues whatsoever.

If your not putting the scent/air freshener in the T,s enclosure, and not spraying directly on the enclosure, forget about it.

Nicotine can be used as a chemical to kill insects. I know some people who have make their own gardening supplies, and they use nicotine. It binds to specific receptors in insects, just like humans.

Wouldn't risk doing that w/arachnids.

Do not ever bleach anything, including plastic or wood, enclosure sides for your Ts as it may keep residuals that are extremely toxic for inverts, including Ts. Vinegar solution on the other hand is fine

I have scented candles around, use a few essential oils, been known to have Orkin spray my floorboards, I were vintage perfumes, etc., I just avoid direct contact with T enclosures.

We often talk about good enclosure ventilation but so is good home ventilation. I open a few windows here and there (weather permitting) and run two air cleaners. I am allergic to a lot of things plus have chemical sensitivities. If I am okay, I figure the less-exposed Ts will be okay as well. (fingers crossed -- it's worked 5+ years now with the Ts)

Just don't go too overboard -- your home shouldn't smell strongly like a spice factory or anything!

As long as you shut the door you should be fine.

I worry too, so the T room and the largest surface of the house (which would be the floor :troll:) are cleaned using vinegar. I still use all purpose cleaner on kitchen counters and the bathroom.

The only scented thing I use is deodorant. I would be very cautious of using anything aerosolised around Ts. Even some essential oils can have insecticidal properties. I know birds are highly sensitive to chemicals so most bird people avoid anything that could pose a risk. There just seem to be many cons and not many pros to using these things around tarantulas.

Homo sapiens has a poor olfactory sense, so unlike better endowed species like canines, are not used to or able to appreciate the nuances of natural odors. Strong scents that are percieved as "clean" or enjoyable are used to mask the natural odors of their nests.

Thank you for this insight! Such a bizarre species, the Homo sapiens. I shall continue to enjoy the natural scent of my den and wrinkle my nose when I encounter artificially scented people and places :p
