ok, i bought scarabs today (3 of them) and i have no idea what kind they are at all. they were just labelled 'scarabs'. the pic i included is the closest one i could find that looked like them. but instead they're kind of bluish-grey and small, and they look dusty. i can't find anything on scarabs on the net or in books. what should i keep them on, what do they eat, how big do they get and better yet, what kind are they???

thanks,
emilsmee

scarabs

well mine don't have dung to roll, i only said they KIND OF look like that, lol. does that still make them a dung beetle? should i give them some dung and see if they play with it and eat it? do they have a dung preference? they've been eating pinkies and blueberries apparently... is that good for them? should they be in a moist substrate? right now they're in desert blend.
my fiance brought them home because i keep tarantulas (i guess he was thinking i liked ALL creepy crawlies, and i admit they are cute) but now i don't know what to do with these guys and can't find any info... grr!!

I'm not sure on that one...look up "dung beetle" in google's images section...from what I've seen, the shell of the dung beetles seems to be alot smoother than the one yours has...however there are thousands of species of dung beetle...so it's kinds hard to tell :? ...but hey...toss in some dung and see what it does ;)

There are many websites out there with some info...but here's a link to one just in case... http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/clinic/Bugofwk/970081/dungbeet.htm

BTW...you should try to find out where the person who sold you them got them in the first place...and then try to do some detective work and find out exactly what you will be taking care of...best of luck!

They don't get any bigger than they are now as beetles in beetle form are mature reproducers. I am interested in finding out where you obtained these... if they are a dung beetle... and by the sounds of it they are... the adults, as well as the larvae, eat dung and in some cases carrion. However if they are aeting things like pinkies and berries i would think that they would be some form of darkling beetle ( i once got some of these mislabled as scarabs) look at the antennae... If they are staright and made up of similar segments that is probably what you have... Most Scarabaeidae have club shaped antennae. Are there more available? I can trade for sun scarabs? You should try to take a pic of them... or post their size.
