Species ID and any info would be appreciated im building his enclosure in ground and his current is essentially a giant raised planter on concrete so weeds havent been an issue but the mans growin. I can plant a browsing and grass mix to try and suffocate the weeds in right now once i take the big ones out if they arent safe to eat.

You shouldn't have any weeds if you got an above ground. If you don't get dye free mulch soon, you are gonna catch hands.

The above ground enclosure doesnt have any weeds that i havent looked into. These are pictures from where his new enclosure is going. Hes about 6.5” shell wise and is outgrowing his 5x3’ enclosure(the above ground) so its becoming a 8-9x3’✨pond✨

If you need any bugs to feed him I would love to send some to watch him chase them. Only the Cali legal ones though.

The bottom one is not safe. The pond idea is cool. I want to get red ears but I only have sulcatas. How old is the tortoise?

Oh man, I had no idea they were strict herbivores. RIP that budget.

I had mine for four months without spending any money. It was mostly them grazing and stealing my family’s lettuce.

I also think hes about 3 or 4 i dont quite remember. Hes a slow grower but every vet visit has gone well and he doesnt have any pyramiding, appetite or joint issues, and speeds around no problem. But Ive also seen a few people with tortoises the same age with a 12 inch carapace.

Usually for growth in almost all animals it boils down to parameters. If you are bang on for parameters and it still is not meeting milestones, then it is genetics. And between you, me and god there is only one of us who can change that right now.

I believe those weeds are safe. Look on tortoiseTable for info on plants. Most of the time, the tortoises will not eat it if it’s not safe

Mine are a year old and still almost 4 inches but others have 2 year olds that are 10 pounds and 7 inches. It is just where they originated from and diet

It’s not that expensive, all you need is lettuce, grass, hay, weeds, hibiscus, and occasionally fruit
Lettuce is healthy for sulcatas???????

I raised box turtles and everyone knows lettuce is nothing but empty calories for them. In fact lettuce has something that is a bit addictive for them.

I can’t imagine lettuce is healthy at all for any turtle or tort.

Am I wrong on this?
