I woke up this morning to go handle my babies. My two new Ball pythons I purchased at the Reptile Expo....and I found one dead by the water dish....what a horrible thing to wake up to....I am not sure what could have caused it but my guess is cold temperature...its only like 78 in the "hot spot," where my heat pad is...my heat pad is obviously not strong enough and im going to have to find a heat lamp today some how so my other one doesnt pass away along with him. I hate today :(

Sorry to hear about your loss. Though I dont think it was a temperature thing, as 78 isnt that low, and they can handle temps like the for quite awhile. I lost a male ball python while trying to brumate last year, I couldnt get my temps down enough in my house, so I placed him in the garage. Temps dropped drastically one night, and since I had no heat pad...he got too cold. So it takes extreme temps to kill them. But 78 is not extreme, so I dont think that's what killed your snake.

Did he look all-around healthy externally? Was he Captive Born?

He seemed healthy, moved normally, beautiful bright colors and marks, I held him the night before and he seemed just fine.... he was captive born yes.

That always sucks to hear, sorry for your loss. Instead of a lamp, you may consider a ceramic heat emitter. My BP has had one since I've had him (3 years?) and I've never had a problem. Just keep any eye on them around children and/or other pets you may have, because they get HOT. Good luck with the other BP.

Later!

This would be my questions too! Some people sell bush babies as Captive born. I would ask if they are captive bred and born. But in reality sometimes it doesn't matter, sometimes they just up and die. In a perfect world they would all make it. I wouldn't think it was a heat problem though so don't beat yourself up over that. It stinks to loose a pet. I would contact the people that you purchased him from and tell them what happened. You haven't had him that long if I remember correctly.

I am sorry that he didn't make it.

I am very sorry for your loss. Its sad but in my experience, snakes just don't get sick. They just die. My last one I lost was acting totally normal and then just began convulsing and died. :(

Yeah I am 100 percent sure its cd....the vendor we got it from is the same company we order our snakes and a few spiders from at my pet store....there was like blood coming out of the snakes nose and mouth when i found it dead. im worried my other ball might have what the other one had.

Thank you so much! That truly does mean a lot to me. I hope the other one pulls through healthy and with no problems....she seems to be a finnicky eater just like most ball pythons though.

Thanks so much. I was using just a heat mat before, but now I have a heat lamp which is keeping it nice and warm in there.
