-Hello, which are the most easy methods for handling and counting roaches?
-For example, with crickets one may take an egg carton and shake it within a big empty container, and then using a counter-jar for crickets (specially fabricated for the purpose) for completing the task.
-But with roaches I think what it may be a different task, specially with fast moving species and with the nymphs of all species. And the task of counting them may be not so simple like using a counter-jar for crickets.
-How you doed these tasks with roaches?
-Thank you very much in advance, best regards.

-And one thing more: which are the best methods for handling one by one roach both adults and nymphs? maybe with a medical nail like "mayo" or other similar nails? The important thing is not crushing and / or damaging their fragile soft bodies across this task.
-Thank you, best regards.

How to Handle...

Dear Arachnopeon:

Roaches are thigmotactic. They actually LIKE to feel physical contact...when I cup a roach's head and forequarters in one hand it will permit me to hold its wingtips between my (other) thumb and forefinger while I am transferring it.

Nymphs of even the largest species are small enough to enfold in one's hand.
Once they feel safely concealed they lose interest in escape attempts.

However, counting a lot of them can be difficult.Chilling them sufficiently to
immobolize a hundred or more might kill some;and transferring that many one at a time can become very tiring...I just "guesstimate."

Yours very truly,
Louise Esther Rothstein.

if you want to know about how many in a large group then count out a percent of random roaches (try to get a good size representation of your colony) and weigh them together

then weigh all your roaches and divide by the first wt then multiply by the first count

it won't be exactly accurate but it should be a decent guesstimate
