We all pretty much know mantises of all kinds are notorious for their short life spans, unfortunately, I've run into some bad luck lately. Two of my largest mantises recently died through the molting process. I've had them awhile, but it wasn't up until now where they started rupturing their abdomens.

I observed the second mantis today to see if the same thing would happen, his abdomen "exploded" in the same way. I've never really had this problem with molting mantises before, I just hope the same thing doesn't happen to my last one.

Any ideas on why this occurs? They are well fed, have good branches to molt on, and I keep the enclosure lightly misted so it's easier for them.

I have very limited knowledge of mantids but wanted to offer my condolences. Its always tough to lose a critter.

Yeah it is, a lot of people find it strange how I get sad whenever I lose a insect or arachnid. Yeah sure, they don't have traditional emotions like we do, but they're still an important part in my household and I like to treat them as such.

I'm no expert but shouldn't this go in one of the other categories? Not trying to be a jerk or anything. Sorry for your loss
