I'm absolutely devastated.

One of the cats appears to have jumped on top of Lilith's enclosure while she was sitting on top of her hide and they squashed the lid down on top of her 😭

She survived losing most of her legs, & being in captivity for over a year, & a cat took her out right after I moved her into a species appropriate habitat.

My roommate sent me photos of the habitat while I was at work, and my heart is absolutely broken.

Cats are predators- not surprised
It has not been a problem before, considering this table contains all of the other tank dwelling animals in the house. Now that it has become a problem, obviously, we are moving them to a location that the cats can't reach.

There are ONLY 2 animals on here that kill Ts over and over:

Cats
Humans

Dogs kill plenty of cats every single day, yet millions of people across the world safely keep cats and dogs in the same houses.
As I've already stated, it has not been a problem until now, and now that it has become an issue the animals are being moved.

This comment is not helpful or productive, I don't understand what you intend to gain by continuing.

he answers almost every thread there is, not sure what we would do without him

very short and literal most of the time, sometimes there just isn't much to say, don't project anything into it

the sight of dead spiders can be upsetting

i know you are looking for sympathy to a devastating loss, ...

i hope you manage to secure your other spiders

cats have got to be the biggest danger (and kill count) to captive Ts, except for humans ofc.

sorry it happed to you and your spider, and after you tried giving it a fancy enclosure too, it obviously wasn't cat proof, that must be doubly upsetting

condolences

Oof ! That's really, really tragic ! Hopefully, this incident won't repeat itself after the remainder of your collection have been moved to a "cat proof" area. Sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss I know it sucks.

It's well known here that if left unattended and a cat has access to where tarantulas are they will knock their enclosures over and kill them or pounce on the enclosure.

You definitely don't want to know what I suggest for that cat. I'm seething over it just imagining it. I know there would be a taxidermied cat on the mantle for display.

However this is not about me and I'm truly sorry but do not get mad at other members over their response. This is not the first post on AB that involves a cat.

My best advice is to keep your tarantulas in a secure room or closest that a cat cannot get into. That or get rid of the cats are your best options.

I am sorry.. its never easy to loose a t no matter how the t went .
Can I suggest shelfs, you can make your shelf the depth of the vivs you have stopping the cat from getting ontop of them.
I keep cats too n this is my worst nightmare so there are only 2/3 inches between the tops of the vivs n the shelf above so even if my cats do accidentally get up there they can't sit on anything. I also only let cats in the room if I am there to supervise them soon as they go near my shelf they are out the room, 3 cats have learnt and come in n snuggle up on my chair while I am busy the new girl is still learning but she understands soon as I say her name because shes looking at the shelves n she leaves the room .
Cats are smart too smart for their own good sometimes but this can be used to your advantage and you can train your cat just like a dog can be trained. You just need to find their trigger play , cuddles or food šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø.
Again this was super sad to read and I am sorry for your loss.

I hopefully don't need to say this but just incase , please don't be cross at your cat , cats just trying to find somewhere warm n comfortable to sleep n all cats love boxes unfortunately and a shoe box sized box will have been to tempting to resist.

Viper gives direct answers but what he says is true , I think that's why it always hits ppl that little harder but believe me there are few ppl on here with as much knowledge and love for these creatures as him, ppl he cares little for but spoods are his passion hence the way he structures his words but please remember the man loves spoods and after 18 years on ab this won't be the first time he has seen this, probably not the last either, and after 18 years of answering the same story's you would be blunt n probably extremely frustrated too. His words may not be what you wanted to see but they are not there for you , viper is here for the spoods. Ppl not so much so please don't get upset at him, it isn't his fault either, it's just an unfortunate accident.

I’m not suggesting this is your fault. If I was, I’d have written ā€œIt’s your damn faultā€

On this forum CATS are reported more than any animal, other than humans, for KILLING Ts.

Hence I wrote I’m not surprised earlier. It’s a FACT.

That’s it.

I am sorry this happened. Its horrible and sad. I would be very upset.

if you can, next enclosure, put it somewhere the cat can’t climb on it. Like a shelf leveled to lid height. I think that would help.

My recommendations for cat proof spider housing would be:
1) shelving where cats won't get to the enclosures/ closed doors to keep cats out.
2) heavy duty containers for enclosures that will hold the weight of a cat if they decide to sit on it/walk across it.
3) locking or screw top lids so the cats can't get the enclosure open if they try.
4) not handling the spiders to prevent an escape.
This has prevented all issues between cats and spiders in my household. I also have lazy older cats that have very little interest in hunting or climbing across shelving, so that is helpful as well. So sorry for your loss. šŸ˜”

file under: This is why we say "If you can't isolate your cats from your Ts don't have both"

It has never been a problem......until it is

Which is why those who've been around a long while (and have heard the same stories over and over) have the attitudes we do.
Everybody thinks they'll be Keith Richards, everyone wins up Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, ad nauseaum

Cut and Dried. Some people don't understand your brevity, I find it refreshing.

In the long run, the cat is the product of the human's choices, as is trying to cohabitate them, so in the long run, it is always the humans fault.

I'd toss Lemmy from Motorhead in that bunch ! He managed to live out his excesses until they caught up with him... Still, he did get to reach 70, which most would never get that far when considering his lifestyle.

Thank you and I always appreciate your input too!

I can definitely get carried away with details in a response, but usually I point out major issues and explain how to deal with it ;) But yes, your brevity is sometimes all that's needed, @viper69 !

If you have small animals you need to make sure they are protected from your cats. Cats are predators, and mammalian predators are curious and often investigate or get into things. They also love to climb and explore which knocks things over. That's just their nature. May be a good idea to invest in a large locking glass cabinet where you can put the enclosures. I believe I saw some at Ikea a while back that looked decent.
