Hello

So three days ago I was forced (kids) to rescue a large fishing spider from the freezing cold. She (I think) had pushed herself tightly into the corner of the window on our front door with two or four legs pressed against the glass. I assume to catch some heat from the house. So it was the first snow of the year (western pa) and the temps were in the low 30's and she was there all day and finally I brought her in around midnight. She was slow to move but she crawled into the container with some leaves I had put in there. I left her overnight and she survived so I went and bought a cheap little cage put some wood bark water and rocks inside.

She seems fine I guess, found a good spot on top of a branch and cleaned her feet for hours it seemed moved her pedipalps a lot. Then she moved under a piece of moist tree bark and has been there ever sense. We did get tiny crickets and put three in there but she has not even tried to eat them. When one of the crickets would wander over and gently touch her legs she would just pick up her foot like "hey don't touch me I'm tired". So my question is...is she just stressed out, or maybe going into molt or dying. When she moves none of her legs are curled I'm just worried she will starve to death. Please let me know what you think, thank you. Pics show first rescued and then three days later

They can go a long time without food! Cold temps slow their metabolisms, so food most likely just isn't her priority right now. If you keep it the whole winter, it should eat for you eventually!

Thank you for taking the time to answer. Yes we plan to keep her until late spring, I wouldn't feel right about putting her back out in the cold. Are the small crickets okay to feed her when she does eat?

We call that "overwintering"! I've taken in some jumpers before the snow here in CO, and it's very rewarding to help them get nice and strong and release them in the spring. Thank you for saving this beautiful girl! Crickets, mealworms, or even small feeder fish are all appropriate prey, they can be about as large as the size of her carapace (where the eyes are/legs connect). Don't worry if she doesn't eat for several weeks, she looks pretty healthy and changes in environment can cause them to avoid eating until they settle in!

Yeah I'm really glad I did! Now I find myself going "Hmm I wonder what Donda is doing". LOL...So I just checked on her and moved her in front of a window since it's pretty dark today. I just noticed that there is silk all around the tank but she is still upside down under the bark above the water. So thats good for me it means she is wandering around the tank when I not creeping on her. I am very invested in this creepy cute spider. But boy does she look like a light colored wolf spider. If I didn't already know the difference in the eyes I would have said that what she was. "Overwintering" love that term!

They're fascinating pets! I check on my tarantulas multiple times a day, even if I know they probably haven't moved 😂 Keep us updated on this girl, it seems like she'll do well in captivity for you

Yeah they make awesome pets. There is a Agelenidae hanging out in my entrance window above the door. I put a light up there to attract moths and she has been growing rapid from the constant feeding I'm getting ready to bring her in as temps drop here.

Once she gets more comfortable with her new environment she'll eat for you she doesn't look hungry to me.. pretty sure she'll be okay

Caveternal She has been in heaven! LOL! And SilentWidowMaker thank you for the advice. She is still doing good, I know she is wandering the cage because there is silk around. I don't think they make webs like other spiders but She silks here and there.
