I ordered a 1 inch b.albopilosum from tarantula inc. it is getting settled in and has given me no trouble so far it accepted 2 crix and devoured everything but the back leg of one. I havent tried holding it yet because i want 2 get him nice and settled in so i dont stress him out i do plan on taking him out and holding him when he does tho thats why i picked a species such as this this so i could hold it and not just let it be a looks only pet ive been trying to talk my parents into getting it for months and when my birthday came thats was it. it arrived in great condition and i was tickled 2 death when i first saw it. {D

I'll have to warn you: I have a B. albopilosum and if yours has the same appetite mine has, you might want to make SURE it knows your hand isn't food when you start trying to reach for it to handle it. Mine has ATTACKED the tongs I use when I've gotten them too close before, I only assume because it assumed that something besides itself moving meant dinner.

You are warned. Now enjoy your curlyhair :p

mine has shown no sign of aggression toward anything but the crix i guess mine has a more gentle personality than yours but im not afraid of bites ive had snakes lizards rats my sis has a mean guinea pig and ive been bit by them all including a black racer that was so aggressive it injured its face from hitting the glass to try and bite me on the outside of the tank thats not even defensive thats plain aggressive:evil: so i think i will be fine with that but lets hope it doesnt show any aggression at all so far i think im going to have a nice relationship with my t but thanx for the warning anyway.:)

My curlyhair will do the same thing, as well as many of my other Ts. The thing I do is use different objects to signify different behaviors, I use tongs exclusively for feeding and as a result most of my Ts will strike the tongs. For handling I use a small paint brush and gently rub the T in the legs or abdomen and coax it out and I usually have no problems as long as I dont jab the T or make sudden movements. and dont be afraid if your little buddydoes strike in the enclosure, its only natural for an animal to defend its burrow, but most will be just fine when they are out of thier burrow or enclosure

beyond that enjoy your new T and love him/her well :D

haha, it would be the worlds most powerful curlyhair if it put you in the hospital{D more like an "ow that hurt you little bugger!" and then go back to your day. tell your mom to save hospital bills, cause the doctor would tell you there is nothing to do

Congrats, and welcome!!! Tarantula Inc is a pretty good company to go with, and Brachys are really great first spideys, so you're off to a good start already.

LOL....Brachys aren't exactly Baboons or Pokies. Even then, you're going to pretty well get laughed out of the emergency room. Just give the T some respect, and you won't get bitten. When I handle, I don't pick up my T's. In fact, unless they're slings or small juvies (these ones I'll manipulate out), I use a cup to get them out of their enclosures. Tarantulas (even the docile ones) can be defensive on their own turf, and will stress easily. Manipulating it into a cup minimizes the stress, and once out, and given a couple minutes to get over it's initial disorientation, the T is less inclined to be defensive. Good luck, and don't get bit!!! :p

I wouldn't get in the habit of hand feeding. I use tongs for every single T no matter what the demeanor. If you just got the T within the week. I would settle down and let it become more accustomed to the enclosure. Our first thought when rehousing Ts is to throw in a cricket to make them more comfortable. That's not a very good thing. The T isn't used to the new smells and living conditions and an annoying cricket is the last thing the T needs. It sounds like you're doing a great job. Just don't forget to give your T some personal space when they first move in.

Oh...be aware that your Ts personality can change drastically after a couple good growing molts.

I am glad to have read this thread. I have a curlyhair that is an assertive, evil, ill tempered critter at the least. My local T enthusiasts swear that curlyhairs are the sweetest, docile, possibly zen of all. I find that, a crock! I am not one to handle my spiders, so fear of a bite is kept at a minimum, but feeding time can be interesting; it has the appetite of a teenage boy!
Thanks for the validation of my experience with my curlyhair.

woah, curlyhairs are not evil monsters and one mean specimen doesn not bode for the entire sp. B. albopilosum is one of the best handleing Ts because decades of experience from experts and pet keepers alike have shown that compared to other tarantulas the brachys are some of the best to handle. Once in a while you can get one specimen that is a meany, i have a rosey who is horrible but I also had one that was sweet and handled well. Also the curly in question on this thread was never said to be mean or agressive at all, and again it doesnt validate that curlys are monster. I just dont want a good T to get a bad rap.

Every so often someone will end up with a psychotic T from a normally docile speceis. Look at John3800's rosie, for example. If you have more than one person saying the same thing, (the opinion of the B. albopilosum, is prety widespread), and when one out of a hundred has a bad experience, it's not really the whole of the class to blame. I honestly don't blame you for having that opinion, and your experience is quite valid. But so are the hundreds of others who will swear on their dead relatives (and those who aren't feeling so well) that their B. albopilosum is a pet rock.
Not an attack, or flame...just throwing it out there. ;)
