Occasionally I will find house centipedes scuttling on the walls of my basement. Yesterday I spotted one, and instead of crushing it like before, I decided to keep it, partly to get over my fear of them, and partly for another pet. I’ve tried keeping house spiders but they’re just too small and delicate. I have to admit, it’s adorable and I see the appeal of pet insects.

Currently, my centipede is in a small ventilated plastic container. I read somewhere that they need a lot of moisture so I added a wet sponge piece. I only poked around 6 holes with a thumbtack. Is this enough to allow the centipede to breath and keep moisture in? (Back when I was interested in tarantulas, I learned that Ts don’t need a lot of oxygen so I assumed this would be the same).

I’m not sure what I should feed it. I read online they eat various house insects and I gave it an ant but the ant was ignored. It’s around 1-2 inches, will it be able to take on a mealworm or even a smaller cricket?

The plastic enclosure is pretty bare except for the shredded paper towel bedding, and two water caps to serve as bowls for the sponge and the food. Should I replace the paper towels with soil, and can I add a branch inside for climbing? The centipede used to be in a plastic cup, where it didn’t move around much. Now, it seems to be exploring the enclosure and running around. It also seems to be licking or biting its longer antenna, is this typical behavior? Online I can’t find much about caring for them, just how to get rid of them and that’s the last thing I want

House centipedes will never eat living mealworms or roaches as they are too coriaceous. Pre killed ones, and by prekilled i mean smashed or cut into pieces, are accepted. Ants are too small, tough, they can bite and spray acid, so they are avoided by most predators.
Preferred prey items are crickets, house spiders and small moths.

They will also eat fruit and vegetables like apple and potato.

I used to keep them in open-top jars with a layer of damp substrate and a piece of bark to hide. They usually molt hanging like stick insects and whip spiders, so something to climb on is appreciated.

Centipedes spend a lot of time licking their antennae and limbs, especially after a meal.
