You need to start out with alot more than that maybe 100+.

You can start with 2 or 2000, and eventually get the same result. Its one of those things where the more you have the faster you have a colony that produces excess that can be fed off, which also depends on how many things you are trying to feed with that colony.

sorry I dont have a camera. Just buy rubbermaid tub. I think about 30 gallons? that's just a bad guess. I use coco bark for substrate but its not necessary. it just eats up a bit of the smell and keeps things humid which is a must for lateralis. Buy some egg flats and arrange them in the tub so that they lay on top of each other but dont reach the top of the tub. After that you just have to find a lid or something for food, find a good way to provide water. I use commercially bought water crystals but some people just provide water with stones so that the nymphs dont drown. Then you've got to provide a heat source. I cut a square hole in the the lid of my tub and put seran wrap over it so that I could use an infrared bulb. Others cut a small hole in the side of the tub and run heat cord into the bottom and hot glue the hole so that the roaches dont escape.

You'll want to start with about a 100 roaches though. I started with 50 and it took around 3 or 4 months before I had enough to feed them out. No matter how many you start with eventually you'll have to find a place to give them away. That's where im at at least.

Just search "lateralis enclosures" or something. People have written several good HOW TO guides for how to build enclosures

Something like this should work to start off with a few males and females. That colony has about 3000 roaches in it likely. I started with only some nymphs about a year ago and I have three kk's that I cant seem to feed off enough. You'll find they reproduce faster with some peat or cocoa substrate to increase humidity.

Does cheese make it smell terrible?

LOL. I haven't noticed because I keep a cricket breeding ground in my room and it overpowers everything.

AH! that would do it. I've never kept a huge amount of crickets--I went straight to roaches--but from what people say it sounds like the would consider using a used trash bag as a gas mask when walking into a cricket room

Cheese and meat products are very much not recommended as roach food.

ok not going to start another lateralis thread for this....but i have had mine for about a month now. (over 1000) and havent seen any babies yet. at first i kept them with moist peat moss and a heat lamp about 10 inches away from the top(which has 1 4inch wide by 7 inch long slit cut for ventilation and screen hot glue to it. my main problem way my egg crates molded! so i lost the peat and now a week later i see egg cases but none are doing anything(some are old egg cases too. any advice to give these guys a jump tart without mold issues.

The egg cases take a while to hatch. Keep them consistently warm and not completely dry. I had to tweak the setup for quite a while until I got some successful hatchings. Good luck.
