ive had my haplopelma lividurm for almost 3 weeks now and he has not burrowed yet. he will either stay in 1 place and not move or he will climb the tank. i have one of those small wood shelters for him and where i placed it i made a mediam sized hole in the substrate for him to start his burrow but he still hasnt. any one have any ideas? the only thing i can think of is stress because of a new enviroment but it has almost been 3 weeks so im not sure. any one have any ideas?

Hi, don't worry about it, its absolutely fine. Sometimes they take months to burrow. It does help a little if you loosen up the substrate a little, it might be too much packed together for it to. I once had a Haplopelma longipendum that wouldn't burrow for a month, just made a lean-to type web against the peat and the plastic of its cage. I took a pencil and got the webbing down, a day later it built one of those turreted burrows we all know the Haplos for.

Really...??
I always pack the substrate together for burrowers, this way their tunnels won't collapse that soon... Always worked for my so far.

Could be wild caught??I know mine was wild caught and in rough shape when I got her. There was a point in time I thought she wasn't going to make it.It took close to 3 months and a molt for her to settle in and start burrowing.Prior to that she stayed mostly wedged in a corner between a hide and aquarium glass. Now that's she's totally settled in and in good shape she's got herself a great burrow and lots of webbing to boot.Takes a while for them to settle in,especially if there's a chance it's wildcaught.Give it time..you'll have it for a long time...peace..

<ps..enjoy seeing it while you can..lol..once it burrows you may get lucky and see a pair of legs sticking out of the burrow periodically.Next post will be."My H.lividum finally burrowed.Haven't seen it in months. Is it ok?...lol...

re

Just make a pre burrow for it in one of the back corners of the tank, lean a peice of corkbark over it, over time it will accept the burrow and eventulay build, a tube web in it and a chamber at the bottom, this is how i keep all my haplopelmas in several inches of substrate 8-9", they are pretty happy , i can see them at night with of their legs sticking out waiting to ambushe prey--Jeff

actually is cool because he built his burrow alongside the glass so i could see him, unless he starts to web the side of the glass like my usambara did...
