Quaker oats kill red runners.

I won't say what else they probably kill... I doordashed some oats on a whim because I felt like changing the substrate in my runners, and after several hours I saw some standing around all weird, looked in and they were twitching and dying. I immediately moved them into another bin with everything the same except no substrate, and have had 0 deaths in the 24 hours since. I lost about 15 total medium sized nymphs before I noticed, which could have been a lot worse. It's my starter colony and I think I only have 2 mature females in there so far, so I'm really glad it wasn't them.

Pepsico is not renowned for wholesome organic, unadultered quality food products. Encountered their shell game in the past with gluten and other allergens in bait and switch manufacturing and sales. And they probably buy BKC by the freight train load.

What's BKC? I saw a biocide or something on a quick search. Yeah I should have known, I actually ordered the generic stuff but they didn't have it, probably better. Anything I do get will have a few test roaches for a night or 2. These are so sensitive I'm thinking of keeping some on me, like a canary in a coal mine. Pull them out at the restaurant and dump a few on my plate "What are you doing!?!?!" "just testing my food ma'am".
Everything I saw searching about quaker was lawsuits for cancer from glyphosate, 1000ppm glyphosate, lying about ingredients... Well I fell for it. It said oats. Even marijuana dispensaries have to list every single agent used during the entire growth process.

The canary in the coal mine is always a good idea, especially when dealing with mega corporations that always place profits before health or anything else.
BKC is an extremely powerful biocide that is allowed as a food preservative and used in all sorts of food packaging in minute quantities. But some animals are undoubtedly more susceptible to it than others. One of several biocides and reasons why some foods are labeled Contains no preservatives.

I stick with the generic brand oats for my meal worms.

Yikes. And to think I was considering feeding my new superworm colony with the remaining bag of Quaker quick oats that I had lying around. Sure glad I didn't go that route! Here's hoping the Safeway Compliments brand oats I ended up using are a suitably non-lethal substitute.

I thought that was a problem I only had, it killed off my whole red runner colony.

Next time I'm just going to buy roach chow online and use coco fiber for substrate.
