I'm new to mantids and was wondering about a couple of things. First, can mantids bite? Do they hurt? What are some that are particularly defensive? What mantids species are suitable for novices?
Yes, they can bite. No, it doesnt hurt that much. Their spikes on their raptorial legs can be quite painful though. Chinese mantids can be a little defensive, but overall are sweethearts. Go with a Chinese mantid (Tenodera aridifolia) or a Euro mantis (Mantis religiosa), theyre super easy to keep and are great beginner mantids.
