I was thinking about implementing a shelf system and to save space I want to stack my medium herp terrariums. I have avoided doing this in the past because I am worried about disturbing the animal in the upper terr by moving the entire cage every time I have to feed or perform maintanance for the one on the bottom. Does anybody else stack, does it work for you? Do your animals get stressed about being disturbed once or twice a week or does it not make a difference?

I do some stacking of enclosures. Not more than 2 high though.
I feed once a week and do maintenance once two days after, and don't bother them the rest of the time, so they aren't any more disturbed than if they were not stacked.

I stack everything. I drill holes in the side big enough to slip a cricket in so I dont have to unstack everytime I feed

Haha Brian I thought i was the only one who cut holes for feeding. Since most of my enclosures are smaller, It is very easy and convenient.

cheers

I would rather go for a neater look than stacking.. if you are handy (im definently not) you could make a pyramid type stacking system out of wood (i'd admire you)

I plan on (after saving up for awile) getting one of those 5 shelf storage cabinates. I live in an apartment so space is very limited and one of those will allow me hold a pretty decent collection in a relatively small amount of space. Also it will keep my cat out while I'm gone.

This is kind of what I had in mind, I'm hoping to find something just as servicable but cheaper. I've calculated that you can hold 16 - 20 5.5 gal tanks if you place them depth wise and not length wise. I was thinking of using heat tape/thermometer on the back walls for a heat source. Since it's metal there will be less risk of fire (espec. with thermometer) and it will hopefully heat up each shelf pretty well. The whole thing is still in the idea/planning stages.
