They ARE messy snakes; I've had Cribos, which are the Central American species of Indigo, and they eat and poop like there's no tomorrow! These snakes are closely related to Coachwhips, and those are messy snakes, too, with bottomless stomachs, but I guess I've just gotten used to it. I never had one "spray the walls", but they do have a very runny poop and large amounts of it. They have a fast metabolism and need to be fed frequently to maintain their health and weight. Next to a Retic or a False Water Cobra, these snakes have got to have the most-intense feeding response I've ever seen. You definitely need some extra-long feeding tongs and nerves of steel to feed one of these, because they will lunge out of the cage to devour anything that moves once they smell food!

It's weird how you mentioned the king cobra. that's what i was thinking of too when i see the indigo. king cobra is a snake that i want to keep someday.

i can't see myself devoting that much time and space to a venomous snake regardless of how cool it is. 18 feet is too much cobra for me:eek: i'll just enjoy them on tv, thank you:rolleyes:

i think i may get a false water cobra someday though;)

yea, that's true, they do get really big. plus it is illegal to own venomous that are non natives in CA, i think.

but i always wanted one. I heard that they are really smart and recognize their owner. also heard that they will stand between a new cobra and their owner in order to protect him.

no, they're not legal here but you can get anything on the internet if you look hard enough:rolleyes:

i don't think i would want to test that theory, kyozo:eek: it might just want to bite you instead of letting another cobra do it;P

Awesome!, I don't mind having 2 or 3 high maintenance animals, I don't like having more than that though. These are one of my fav native snakes.

I have seen King Cobras on national geographic chase the camera people when they encroched on their owners territory, I have also seen them being casually handled by young children, and the snake did not care at all, but went and threatened someone else that got to close, so there is some merit to KyuZo's statment, though I am not sure about the whole protecting from another cobra thing.

Back to the original topic. Indigo snakes. Nice pick. I had one a few years back and I wish I still kept them but the lizard projects are taking priority right now. Mine was an amazing animal, but it was messy. It ate a few times each week, but it also pooped frequently. I have experienced the whole "spray the walls" reputation these guys possess, but I wouldn't say it is any worse than the messes my retics make. (Picture an entire dust pan sized scoop and then repeating the process a few times.)

it's cool, i am just stating what i've read and heard. people are entitle to believe in what they want.

just because it's a snake, doesn't mean that it lacks the intelligence or can't recognize the person/people that take care of it.

I never said they lacked intelligence, in fact I have been lucky enough to work with King Cobras at the Zoo where I was a keeper and I've also worked for a summer tracking wild indigos in SE Georgia on a military base as well as caught a couple in Texas while herping. I'm quite familiar with both species and their intellectual capabilities...just wouldn't expect them to save your life anytime soon.

Shouldn't believe everything you hear and read.

Texas Indigo

Me with an Eastern male I found (untelemetered) while working in GA.

EDIT: This is LeilaNami by the way....he keeps forgetting to log out and I keep forgetting to check and log in {D

ummm... yea, that's nice. just because you're a guy that work in zoo and had few years of feeding them and cleaning their cages, doesn't make you qualify as someone that can discredit what i've read or tell me what i should believe.

people in india and thailand spend their entire life, generation after generation, keeping king cobras. a few years:rolleyes:. whatever

and like i said before, people are entitle to believe in whatever they want. you are no one to take that away from anyone. so just because you work in the zoo with snakes, doesn't mean anything to me, period.

That's fine, I wasn't trying to impress you, just establish that I've had actual experience with the aforementioned animals and am not going on stories heard from others or documentaries (Also having been involved in a couple of those, I can tell you there's always a "Story" to be told with ALOT of staging/production). I am in absolute agreement with you that these two snakes are without a doubt amongst the "smartest" snakes we are familiar with (there may be some incredible behaviors in other species we aren't aware of, thus making them much "smarter" than we give credit for).

I'm not trying to put you down or make you believe anything so there's no need to be defensive. It's just that there's a bit of sensationalism in your comment, a discussion I think is beyond the topic of this post.

Good luck with your guard snakes man.
;)

Indigos are incredibly awesome snakes and to me the king of all North American Snakes. They are really badass in that they live very extreme lifestyles. They eat everything in site and come up in the middle of winter during the cold weather to have sex...in captivity they are definitely messy but worth it.

King Cobras IMO - Not so fun. But Amazing to hear "growl" in person.

ok, that's cool. thanks for letting me know. from your first post with the three smileys, i know that they are only pictures, but they were putting out a lot of those "whatever you said is a joke kinda deal," and i didn't care much, so my comment to them were neutral. I believe that Tleilaxu may also interpreted the same from the smileys, so that's why he backed up what i said with what he saw on National Geographic.

but the post after that was more like "you gotta be stupid enough to believe it."

thanks for clearing that up
