Puppy troubles

My beloved Poodle had her puppies Sat night and Sunday morning. Well, they're adorable! 2 boys, 2 girls, 1 black 2 white and 1 Apricot. I may keep one for my own, but I cant decide based on color.
Anyway, my neighbor is already saying she wants one. Well, she cant have one, but I havent told her yet. She has 2 dogs, had 3 but one got loose and got lost. The other puppy is in a pen in the backyard, being ignore for the most part. It is properly fed and watered, and it has shots and everything. But I want my puppies to go to good, loving homes where they'll be cherished like I cherish mine. Poodles are very special dogs who love everyone (If they arent spoiled too much), and I think they deserve the best.
Then my sister in law called today saying SHE wants one also. No way on this one either! She has 2 mixed dogs at her house, one had a broken leg because her boyfriend kicked it when it was getting into the trash (never took it to the vet). The other is tied up in the backyard all the time. She says she loves them, but I dont believe it. The cat I gave her a long time ago just recently got ran over. I even gave her a gerbil awhile back, and even THAT got out and got ran over!! That was the end of it for me, since ive witnessed all this abuse.
I just cant do it, there's no way I can give my babies to these people. But I havent told them yet, I dont know how they will take it, and I hate having people mad at me. I just know I have to tell them eventually.
Ive got 1 home already for one of the puppies, and it's a good home :)
So ive got 2 others to place before they are 8 weeks old. Ill probably take deposits on them, and get them their shots beforehand.

I am just so frustrated that people would even consider taking in an animal KNOWING they cant even care for the ones they have already! Arghhh!

*sigh* atleast I have the right to decide who they go to, and I feel its my responsibility to them and their mommy to decide well.

I will take pics of them when they are a little older :)

I understand completely. I would just have to tell them that I don't agree with the way they keep animals and that they couldn't have them. Let them be pissed. They will either get over it or maybe by some stroke of genius look at how they are treating their animals.

per our PM.... here are a couple pics of my dogs.

There are 3 on the couch here.

The other one on the couch sucking his favorite toy and falling asleep.

Since we breed dogs, my family has run into this problem fairly often. Neighbors and relatives wanting a puppy, even though they offer "less than ideal" homes for them. Our solution to require potential buyers to go through an interview with us, and then they must sign a contract agreeing to our terms of ownership. We require certain housing standards, mandatory puppy socialization and training, and the contract specifies that if one of the conditions is not met, or ceases to be met (ie, they quit taking the dog to training, tie it up outside, etc) then we as the breeder have 100% rights to take the dog back. sounds a little stern, but it really discourages those people who just want a pupy cause its cute.

Brandi, that is a good idea but my only question is (and certainly not to be disrespectful) how would you enforce that contract? I can see if it's family or neighbors but what about people that qualify and get the puppy then for what ever reason stop caring as they should?

The reason I ask is because the little bulldog in my pic is intended to stud for my friends bully when he comes of age. I want some say so in how his puppies are treated. I know my friend and he is selective but if I go with pick of the litter to sell or something then I just want to be darn sure he is cared for.

Thanks

Certain aspects of a contract can be binding, ie spay/nueter contracts, etc, but I'm pretty sure that some are not. I know legally, a gift can not come with strings. I cant give person A a gift and say "Look when you die I want this back O.K. I think there is a level of contracts too. And as Gene stated how can you enforce a contract that is 1 not next door or 2 open to interpertation. I have found it best, in the time that I have spent breeding, to not do buisness with familyand not at all with freinds. The only freinds I do buisness with are intellegent enough to understand what in the hell we are doing. Just be selective in who you sell your dogs too. Sit down with them, talk to them and then tell them that you will call them at the end of the day. Gives them time to think and calm the impulse down and gives you the opportunity to get them out of your house. Plus we live in the deep south, you ever tried to REPO a hillbilles dawg, ain't a good situation.

I haven't got a copy of our contract available right now. We've never had to remove a dog, but other breeders who use contracts similar to ours have. Best to check with animal enforcement in your particular area. And no, if you gift a dog I'm not sure how much you can do, our pups go about $2k appiece, so the kind of people willing to drop that kind of money on a dog usually aren't going to just tie it out in the yard anyway.

As far as dealing with family or friends, just tell them no, you already have homes for the pups. Its simple, and they will get over it.

Good luck!

Wow....$2k a dog. May I ask what kind of dogs you are breeding?

They are German Shepherds - all West German lines. The are considered "show" lines, although many of our puppies grow up and go to work as eye dogs, search and rescue, etc. :)

Very nice. I love German Shepherds. They are amazing dogs. Truth is I love most breeds but my wife just won't let me have them all at once. :( I am lucky to have the 4 I have. She loves dogs but just not that many at once.

Thanks :D

We've been involved in rescue for years and do something similar. It seems to work rather well, particularly with people that are close enough that they know you can check up on them <eg>

try telling them you have homes for all the puppies already. It worked pretty well when we bred cocker spaniels and labs way back when.

sorry guys, no pics of the puppies yet. I think im going to just buy a camera today to get the job done. Id hate to miss a picture opportunity with them nursing on mom with their eyes closed :) Their eyes should be opening any day now, I check daily for little peeks, but nothing yet. They are getting HUGE though, they've tripled their weight so far.
Ive named 3 of them, one of them I am keeping, his name is Ricco, named after a beloved Poodle I had as a kid. The white girl is Ivette, the black girl is Ebony. I havent thought up a name for the remaining white/creme boy yet. They are so adorable, I cant wait to show pics :) Im in love with them all already, I never miss an opportunity to cuddle with them when they are awake.
Mom has calmed down alot, she's much more passive, she allows me to hold them without any fuss...though she's always watching me :) She's definitely changed alot, she doesnt act like a rambunctious teenager anymore. She's also gotten alot smarter, now that I can hold her attention longer, ive taught her to sit and shake, which she does very well :) She already knew how to speak on command, being that's one of the easiest tricks to teach a dog who loves to talk :)

Anyway, I will try for pics ASAP. Ill get a camera later today and get them developed. You all are going to LOVE these little guys, they're gorgeous :)

Oh, and about the homes. Ive taken some of your advice and im now asking a fee for them. I was going to give them away, with the cost of shots, but ive decided to take a deposit for the shots, and an extra $100 for boys, and $125 for girls. I figure if someone is willing to pay that price, they are more trustworthy in taking care of the animals essential costs as well. Though I will be keeping tabs on them for the first few months to see to it they are properly suited to their homes. No one is getting away scott (sp?) free with a free puppy, that's for sure :) Oh, and my sister in law is still not getting one :) She had the nerve to send her boyfriend over here (the one who broke his dogs leg and didnt take it to the vet) to get a puppy, thinking they were old enough. Uhhh,...no! :D

Anyway, will post pics soon, just thought id give an update :)

Weights at 9 days old are:

Ivette- 433 grams
Ebony- 402 grams
Ricco- 409 grams
N/A- 381 grams

YAY! I got the camera, I will take pics of them once I get home later this evening. :D Their eyes havent opened yet, and they are 12 days old...so soooon.

I just have one question for anyone that can answer it. At what age can I get them their shots? Is it 6 weeks? What shots are necessary for pups that young? If no one knows, ill just call the vet and see.
