preying mantis in the yard(pic)

somehow my friend spotted this preying mantis in the yard and i got the best pic I could. I usually see like 1 a year around here so its a treat, I love these things i think there so interesting. Is there a way to tell if its a male or female and whats the common name? Anyway I had it for a few days in a tank in my garage and put a cricket in there to see if i could see it eating but never got the cricket so i let it go today.

the sex has somthing to do with the number of segments on the abdomen in most species, i have one that looks just like that guy their awsome to watch
