Pregnant with tarantulas, should I be worried?

This question mainly comes from my paranoid father, but better safe than sorry. Is there any issue with keeping tarantulas while pregnant, or with small children? I don't see why there would be, unless said Tarantula is within reach of the child, and/or in an insecure enclosure, or perhaps the highly venomous ones, but I've only got two small spider-lings of very docile species. I told him it was safe and he should look it up, and he countered with "People say pitbulls are safe, too". Is my tarantula a pitbull? (No offence to those people out there who have wonderful, well behaved pitbulls). He doesn't know it yet, but I'm getting a Mastiff as soon as I move out, and can afford it.

Not sure which sp. you are referring to . But essentially you are right, as your slings develop be sure to wash hands very well before touching anything baby. (Avoiding uricating hairs being passed to ur child). Mastiffs are Great.. be prepared for a huge vet bill. They are very prone to hip dysplasia. Enjoy

Tell him that it's not a pitbull, but two silly little spiders.
No docile T ever killed people. Snakes occasional kill people. Dogs- totally unsafe.

Tell him to properly research Pitbulls, while he looks up the effects of owning tarantulas while pregnant ;)

I've had tarantulas while pregnant and with small children. No problems with either :)

I would be more concerned if you had old world species.

Last year when I was in that situation, we just didn't have her do any old world species cage maintenance or transfers.

I agree with this, and will probably do the same when my girl and I start having kids. NW species are likely fine, but I would be fearful of a pregnant woman or child being bitten by any more venomous species.

Well first of all, recognize that he is basing his decision on concern for you and your unborn child.

Second, it sounds like you are living with your father? In which case, it really is up to him what is inside his house.

If you can provide us with the specific genus/species that you own, we could probably give a more accurate assessment of the risk. (likely nil)

Just don't get bitten while you're pregnant and keep everything for the tarantulas separate from the baby. Remember that while a tarantula bite will be of little to no consequence to a healthy adult, it is far more dangerous in the case of a small child simply due to the difference in body size and immune system.

Its a Brazilian Black and a Mexican Red-knee, both very safe save for hairs. Both are still quite small, as well. Both New World T's. I'm still living with my Dad atm, but moving out very soon, as it wouldn't be ideal for my Fiance to live apart from me and baby. Dad's issue was with me moving out and keeping the spiders.
Lol, I don't even know how one would become pregnant with tarantulas... *burrr* I like them, but not quite that much! Besides, I'm pretty sure that's illegal, and the genetic monstrosities that would result... Yeah, there goes my sleep for the next week.
As far as the mastiff goes, I'm not looking for purebred English, but the American Mastiff. Still, I'm aware that costs will be considerable, and I won't be able to have it for some time. On the Pit Bull... Yeah, I'm never gaining any ground with him on that one. Pretty sure he'd rather I kept my baby in a cage with a dozen lions than a home with a Pit. I prefer to pick my battles...

I personally think every thing will be ok I mean we live with more dangerous species of spiders just out side of our homes black widows / hobos and such I really don't think those two T's would make that big of a difference. At least you know where those two are lol.

Yes, I know you meant the spider, but;
1) There is the user "Hobo" on this forum
2) Hobos...as dangerous as black widows! :p

Anyway, I doubt it will be dangerous. I would hold off on getting any Old Worlds and minimize large T's and excessive hair flickers. Better safe than sorry! :) Any dog, whether it be pitbull or mastiff, can be trained to be perfectly gentle and well-behaved.

Edit: by the way, CONGRATULATIONS on your baby. :D
