I posted some time ago that I was going to attempt to breed my Male and female rose hairs. All went well and everthing up untill now.

My female is about to pop. She is HUGE and thats fine but I am noticing some strange behavior, even for her.

First of all she has begun webing up everything! Not just her enclosure. She is in a good sized cage and the whole thing looks like a giant gobb of spider web.

Second she has started climbing the walls really bad and not just climbing the walls but hanging out right at the top of the cage. Like she wants out really bad.

Third of all she is digging everywhere! She webs up her substrate and then diggs and then webs up and then diggs.

Last she has gone from the sweet little rosie I once had to this beast that will attack you if you so much as look at her wrong.

I can't figure it out. She looks healthy but her behavior is really strange. Is this normal? Should I do something like change the substrate to prepare for her delivery? This is my first attempt at breeding so I would hate to mess it up or lose my spider or her sac becuase of some stupid begginers mistake.

Oh yeah, I forgot. She is eating like a pig too. No matter how many crickets I put in her cage she will eat them. And fast!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well my rose has her tank all webbed up and she climbs but not onto the lid. And I would think she could be grouchy due to the fact that she is pregnant. Rose's are overall weird in behaviour so I wouldnt worry about it. and you know women when they're pregnant they eat all that weird stuff and they are all hungry so maybe it is the same way. Good Luck

Charlie,

She's doing fine. She's looking for a suitable place to build an eggsac and prepping the cage. Put her in a place where she won't be disturbed and check on her occasionally.

Ahhh!! Mine is doing the exact same behaviour!

She was mated last October 12th aswell, so it's been a long wait.

Any changes to humidity, light or temperature required?

Cheers

I didn't make any changes of that nature. I just set her off to the end of a shelf and covered her enclosure with a cloth to give her a little privacy. I can't tell you if that helped or is in any way required, but it worked for me. Mine started eating the sack after about 2.5 weeks. Most people suggest leaving the sac with the mother for at least 30 days, but with this species I'm pulling it after a week or two next time.

What do I do with it?

If I am to pull the sac from the mother, then what do I do with it?

How do you care for an egg sac. I didn't know you had to do that. Your starting to make me think I should have read more than one book before trying to breed.

Thanks very much Botar for the information,

I'm going to leave the egg in with the mother until it hatches/she attempts to destroy it. I gambled and took this route with my H.Lividum and all went well...

Cheers!

With the G. rosea I think it would be worth the gamble. If you were talking about a rare or valuable species, it would make for many a sleepless night.

I've only bred G. rosea twice and both resulted in premature mishaps. It is my understanding that this is an easy species to breed, but difficult to actually get slings from them.

Good luck and keep me posted.

?

Thank you very much Botar.

What is the normal incubation period? And do I just do the same thing with the sac as you did with the individual eggs?

Thanks again man,

From breeding to egg sac seems to vary quite a bit. From egg sac to emergence can depend upon temperature, but I don't know to what degree. With mine, the egg sac was made on March 7 and "eggs with legs" were discovered on April 2. I can't remember exactly when they began molting into spiderlings, but it seems to me it was right around the 60-day mark, which is what I recall hearing from most people.

As far as to how to incubate the sac, I believe you could handle it in the same manner as I did with the loose eggs. Most of my info I got from LaRiz. I'm sure there are others that could help you as well, but I've got to credit him for helping me.

The second G. rosea I've ever had dropped an eggsack a while back. With a little resistence I got the eggsack from her to cut it open and look at the slings. She took it back about 4-5 times, maybe i'm just lucky? Must've been her first breeding (wc) cause she only had 205 slings.

Mine was doing the same thing, I figured she wanted privacy, so I put a little flower pot in with her. She parked herself in front of it, has calmed down substantially and has gone off food.... it must be almost time!! Botar is right, privacy for the little mama!!

Crossed fingers for EVERYONE'S little sacs of love!!!!

my female rose hair i bought from petco back in november is doing the same thing too......she was nice when i first got her and would eat anything i put in .....the past few months though she has been pure evil...would try to "get" anything that invaded her space.....she has been webbing the entire kritter keeper like mad.....looks like some old haunted house in there (so much webbing)....she hasn't been eating much....she has been climbing all over the cage and going up towards the top and all.....i figured she didnt like the ceiling fan and was trying to web up to stop some of the "breeze" from getting in......i havent mated her but im sure she is probably wild caught......i went out of town for the weekend and when i returned and checked on her ...her abdomen is getting bald....so i think my spider is exhibiting pre-moult behavior and not maternal behavior......
im glad i didnt mate her with my mature male.....especially if she is just going to moult....
