Does anyone else do this? I started chewing up carrots really really good and then spitting them out for my AGBs, and they took right to it. I do it now with cucumber and apple and they seem to like it better, even when whole food is cut open and left til it is almost rotting. Is there any risk to them by doing that?

you have all kinds of bacteria and stuff in your mouth

i would be slightly afraid of starting a microorganism war inside the millis

i wouldn't recommend this...
they do need rotted wood etc maybe a tiny bit of compost every now and again, but fortunately they have jaws strong enough to chew the carrot themselves

Maybe you should diversify, one thing i'm sure they can eat is cucumber, lop a section off then cut it into quarters long ways, also if you doing this you can squeeze some cuttle fish bone between four fingers an rub the dust onto the cucumber seed, this way they take alot more in.

Mine love the frozen veggies, boiled of course. When I make them for dinner for my kids, (no salt or butter added if you make for milllis!) I cool the leftovers and then feed it to them. They love the lima beans :) and thats the only time mine seem to eat carrots. Its a nice treat.
I also make homemade applesauce for them. Super easy, just peal and quater some apples, add about 1/4 cup of water (or less) and bring it to a slow boil. When the apples are easily mushed, dump them in a bowl and mash them up nice, let them cool and taadaa! Milli applesauce!
I know, I know, its sick. But I figure it makes for nice variety. Plus my baby millis seem to totally dig this.

As long as we're on the topic of agb milli food, my girl runs, not walks when I put out sweet potato or tomato. She also favors hermit crab food. Since I shred the carrots for my roaches, that's how I serve it to her and she eats it fine, no problem. It never occured to me to cook or prepare food for her, other than washing, peeling or cutting into managable chunks. She doesn't seem to like apple, maybe that's why. Oh and she likes melon a lot, cantalope and honey dew, but warning, they attract fruit flys, so does the tomato.

Try putting the carrot in the mcrowave for a minute, should soften it up a tad. the human mouth is about as clean as a toilet so its not advisable to pre chew food for anything.

Now that Halloween is upon us remember all the bits you cut out for Jack O' Lanterns (peel off the skin with a peeler or cut it away first) Is also VERY acceptable to our milli friends. Mine love any squash at all especially pumkins.

GREAT IDEA PUMPKIN!!!!

I was wondering about cucumber, zucchini and yellow squash. Are they very nutritious for our many legged friends? I always thought of those vegetables as being kind of watery and not really packed with vitamins. Or at least most of the nutrition is on the outside, and I peel that off.

Zucchini and yellow squash are very acceptable as food for them. If you throw in some Goldfish flakes I think they will get their water and nutrients. I know mine run from the flakes when they are first put in, but they are always gone in the morning.

I was told to get some of my roaches fish food flakes and when I went online, my mind was boggled by the shear number and type of fish food. (No jokes please.) Is there a type / brand that you would recommend over an other?

istead of chewing why don't you try a veggie chopper? That would be faster and a bit more sanitary

Millipedes are decomposers, so they'll always wait until the food is starting to break down before they eat it.

Or at least when they think it's broken down. Microwaving would be a good option.

IguanaMama,
I use any type of Goldfish flakes. Usually Wardleys or Tetrafin?
For all worried about the Sanitary natuer of foods the millipedes eat...They also will eat justa bout anythink else that falls on the ground including you. They do eat rotten dead decayed things ...It just seems to depend on the millipede and their preferance. I also feed my millipedes at least 2 times a month the large precooked grasshoppers that they sell for reptilles in a can. Can 'o hoppers or something. The millipedes DEVOUR them quickly.
My piont is they eat some really bacteria ridden stuff. I am sure though if I was eating a mango and happened to spit it oput ..they would eat it , no prob.
Good for them? well......

Oh awesome thread!

I wouldn't have even thought about the pumpkins. We are going to be carving a bunch of them next week, I can bag up some extra and put it in the freezer for future treats.

And the canned crickets, I always wondered what those were good for.

My millis aren't keen on carrots or apples either. They love the fish food, hermit crab cookies and cherry tomatos, just like Iguanamama's. They like thawed frozen veggies, the occasional piece of romaine lettuce, peanut butter, melon and cucumber. Once in awhile a piece of crushed dog food.

I have a food chopper, I will see if they like the carrot and apple fine chopped. :)
