well, basically, heres the story, i was at my house, and i found a HUGE mosquito, so i killed it, seeing as my normal first instinct is to kill them. well, after looking at it, i thought id find out wut species gets as big as this one, and i found the largest mosquitos known supposedly dont come close, it has a BL of 1 cm and a wingspan of 1.5 cm, i have pictures and still have the body, but i cant get an ID on it, because supposedly no mosquitos get that big. If anyone can ID it or give me a place to send the pics to get them checked if its a new species, it would be greatly appreciated. also, i have not disclosed the possibility that this is an unusually large example of a known species, but id just want to find out to be sure. thanks for any help

I think if you were going to send something to be verified, you would be sending the specimen, not photos.

Are you sure its a mosquito?

I'm pretty sure several known species are that big or bigger. None of them are biters, regardless of sex.

I've found them that large. Here in the south US (is that where you are?), they can be found on flood plains. But I've never seen many of them around all at once unlike the smaller (Anopheles) ones that can get you running. My grandfather used to have 1000's of acres (gone now:mad:) I would go exploring on with river bottom flood plain. I've seen the big ones out there. Surprized me too! Almost black. I thought...no way! And these bite. Maybe a little longer than a centimeter, but everything looks bigger before it gets measured so I would have to catch one. Last year I found one here in Austin Tx in my house that was huge with some metalic blue stripes on the thorax. I think I have a picture of it on a disk but it's not very good. I'd have to look for it. I heard it many feet away from me. A high pitched, "WEEEEEEEEEEEEE..." I thought I was on to something too. I never looked into it though. Pretty cool looking for a mosquito. It might help if you can get a good picture of the thorax on that one and post it if you think it's worth it.
