These are a pretty rare species of isopods i keep that are honestly my favorite! These crazy flat isopods are insanely fascinating in my opinion. They are seasonal breeders, meaning they will only breed 1-2 times a year, which is pretty crazy as far as isopods go! Making them that much more rewarding to successfully keep in captivity. This species is native to Greece, and prefers pretty arid enclosures with very little to almost no humidity.

Keeping rare isopods has become a very big hobby of mine lately. Constantly expanding the never ending collection of species in the hobby. With hundreds of species to choose from, its hard to really pick your #1 favorite. But strongly enough, I can easily say these are hands down my favorite rare species of isopods to keep currently.

Does anyone else keep rare isopods?!?

Used to, I isolated the original Oniscus asellus "Mardi Gras Dalmatian" morph, and bred both Porcellio silvestrii and bolivari, (the latter more successfully than the former funnily enough). This was when the Spanish Porcellio were still the hot new thing, I left the invertebrate hobby briefly before the "Cubaris craze", and now that I'm keeping inverts again there's NO WAY I'm buying my way into that genus, (due to the insane market prices), all my spare money goes towards roaches, which are and always have been my specialty. ;)

Lovely shots of this species, one of the most unique Spanish Porcellio in terms of body shape IMO! :)

Smart and dedicated keepers with early enthusiasm for a new genus (like you) makes it possible for these critters to eventually be available for less experienced cheapskates (like me!). Thanks for your work with this beautiful isopod. Good luck!

Very cool! Pleasure to be speaking with you.
Thanks for the kinds words. I totally got sucked into the Cubaris craze, BIG TIME! I currently keep around 95 species, 25 of which are Cubaris. Ive been collecting pretty seriously for a few years now.

these are stunning photos of a very unique species!
I keep about 30 types of isopods, a few of which are fairly rare. I am working on isolating a couple of color morphs of a few different species. Isopods are amazingly fun!
Yeah they are amazing! Thats awesome, i am also working on a few color morphs myself.

Nice, sounds like you've got quite the collection! :) I'm gonna be focusing on roaches mostly for the next few years at least, but there are a few select isopod species I'd be interested in picking up one day, so I may end up at least dipping my toes into the Cubaris species...

Yeah, theres a lot of nice Cubaris sp out there right now, and i assume its only going to get crazier as the year progresses.

Probably, and hopefully the prices drop a bit on some of the older staple species too, like the classic duckies, which apparently breed faster than the common C.murina, yet are still SOOO expensive after being in culture for what, a couple years now...?
