Back around november I bought a P. senegalus. It was about 3 inches and a pale brown on top and a cream color underneath. The first changes I noticed was that 4 dark dots appeared on its head. Now it's about 4 inches and it is developing red/brown dots down its dorsal spine. I've never read anywhere about them changing color as they grow. Has anyone experienced this and what other changes might be forthcoming, if any? Thank you.

P. senegalus should be a solid brownish/olive color. There are a lot of other Polypterus species that look similar. Since these guys are wild caught, I would expect that you probably got another species instead.

Yeah, if you bought it from a chain store, it's probably a misidentified animal.

I used to work for PetSmart and that company is pathetic when it comes to fish/herps/inverts.
