I know some pokies can be sexed by the presence or lack of the dark stripe on the abdomen. Is this the same for the Poecilotheria smithi? At what size would the specimen have to be for the difference to be noticable?

Sexing by the stripe isn't the best way. If I knew I would tell you. Usually if guess with the stripe way on P. regalis, chances are that you will be right. I have that method to not work as well on other pokies. My advice is to just wait for a molt, that's always the best way.

I believe that P. smithi is one of the rarest Ts in captivity. Someone in the U.S. was looking to match up his adult P.smithi for a breeding loan and was having some difficulty.

You read minds too! That is exactly what I was thinking. But would we be able to get rid of the slings. It doesn't seem as though there is much interest in them.

Suprisingly, even though they are much rarer than P.metalica they are priced about the same.

Hi,
I know P.smithi has being bred a few times here in europe, but i believe the egg sacks were very small with very few slings maybe a dozen or more coming from them!

If you have some information about P. smithi please share it with us! I know there have been a few eggsacs in Europe, but as always with this species very few spiderlings. I know that one of the eggsac produced only one spiderling:eek:( And very few breeders are willing to sell any of their spiderlings of this species. But there have been a few females for sale lately.

Suprisingly, even though they are much rarer than P.metalica they are priced about the same.
Acctually, the females that have been for sale here in Europe have been priced much lower than metallica. I know that it has been sold one sub adult female metallica and one adult female smithi out of France lately. The smithi was sold for half the price of the metallica.

There is really very little inerest in them because 1. they are so rare, that very few people have them....so nobody really talks about them 2. there proves GREAT difficulties in breeding them, or at least getting a decent amount of offspring 3. They cost WAYYYYYYYY too much for most people when they can buy a regalis (that looks almost identical to the untrained eye) for a small fraction of the price!!

Cheers,
Andrew

My theory about why they provide so few offspring is that, since they are native to the high altitudes in India, what they are lacking in the current breeding attempts is altitude. Not an easy problem to solve if your not prepared to move to loftier climes.

They are probably the least colorful pokie but for me they have kind of a mythical attraction.
