For a few months now a Poecilotheria regalis has been sitting in a very basic enclosure at my local pet store. I feel sorry for it (especially after hearing so many people go "eww why don't they just get rid of it already") and I was thinking of picking it up because I am starting to think no one wants it.

I would like to know more about them.

I know they are arboreal, HIGHLY venomous, and very fast. Who else owns one and what can you tell me about them?

What Ts do you have already?

Is the regalis a sling, juvie, sub-adult, or adult?

My regalis is rather bold and a little flighty, but still resorts to hiding rather than bolting if pressured. Offer them a lot of hiding options, floor to ceiling. Pokies aren't obligate arboreals like Avics/Avic-adjacents... they do some burrowing at slings/juvies, and will create hides on the sub that extend up cork bark or similar.

If you are asking, you may not be ready.

Arboreal, yes.. very fast- yes. Puts Grown men in hospital- YES documented in med literature I read, up one arm, across your shoulders and down the other before you blink- YES.

In the wild, they live quite high up in a single tree, in a hole.

Good eaters- fast growers

Not the most unpredictable genus, but more unpredictable than many African species. Asian arboreals are "wild" hah.

How big is the Psalmopoeus irminia, and how long have you had it? If you can handle an adult P. irminia (rehousing and all), you can likely handle a Poecilotheria. (Irminia is fast, defensive, and has a similar lifestyle but less potent venom.)

Caveat: I have not kept Poecilotheria yet.

I have kept many Poecilotheria sp! From slings up to large adults! If one design their enclosure the right way, there are seldom caus for concern! These spiders are no Avicularia. Theycare often wery skitish and shy and retreat readily. They shun light so they often stays in their retreat during daytime. Their enclosures should have a thick layer of substrate and corcbark, preferably corkbarktubes. They retreat into those readily when disturbed. If you gonna transfer them to another cage, just take out the corkbarktube containing the spider and place it in the other container. They are very fast, yes but if the setup is right they are not that bad!

Once you get husbandry and Rehousings under your belt of experience, the only way to gain experience keeping Poecilotheria is to actually keep Poecilotheria. The only problem I see is you wont be getting a sling to start with if you get this one from the pet store. But there is a good side to it, you shouldn’t have to rehouse it so if you get the enclosure properly setup, you can put in its adult enclosure. Just feed and keep the normal house keeping done.

Forgot to add, regalis is a good starter pokie.

Late response.
It is an adult. Its $75 (was $150 but its been there for a long time) My P.Irminia is a sling. And I don't have a good enclosure for the T yet so I wont be getting it any time soon. Can I see pictures of P.Regalis enclosures from those of you who own them?

Is it a male? If so I wouldn't even get it because it could be on its last leg depending how old it is.

Pokie setup just like any other arboreal, if adult you can add a cork tube or a nice cork bark piece leaned to the side with some fake leaves around the top. A few inches of substrate in the bottom. With it being an adult you will need something larger than a deli cup so my pictures wouldn't help because i have slings.

It’s a miracle I haven’t been bitten yet , what’s the pet store want for this T? If no one will buy it he should talk the price down .

I think it's worth saying there have been people with pokies as their first Ts that actually managed to take good care of them.

Watch some videos with pokies running around and if you still feel confident after that you could give it a try, talk the price down and take it. But before that make sure you have everything to make sure your new T doesn't escape or bite you. I recommend taking look at Tom Morans videos and all those carton boards connected with cups etc. As long as your reflex is on the better side, you should be fine.

Take my post with a grain of salt as I'm not a pokie owner due to my bad reflexes. (In training with my Psalmos atm!)

He said 75 bucks on sale from 150. Would be nice to see a picture if OP could get one to see if male or female.

Just for the record, there is nothing wrong with using a very basic enclosure for any T.

Yeah only worth it for a female , I got 11 regalis slings $159 once but all were male but 1. Breeding was unsuccessful too.

Here’s a photo of the enclosure one of my P. regalis is in (apologies only have it on instagram): https://instagram.com/p/Bm7krUDnTHQ/

She’s in an Exo Terra Mini Tall. Yeah, it’s a gargantuan water dish but it’s what I had and I haven’t had any problems thus far.

I like giving them (Poecilotheria)
some sort of background (cork tile preferably), and I normally go for a cork tube as a hide (even though this means less visibility overall). You could also have another piece of cork bark as an extra hide/hangout spot.

The one in the photo is a bit strange in that she only likes her driftwood(?) piece, and she kept on pushing out and removing the fake plants I had in there so I took out the second hide and the plants.

You could look at it this way, even if it's a male (in a pet store, probably), with the several months or even longer he may last, you will have gained experience to determine whether or not you want to continue with pokies. Plus, you wouldn't have to deal with a flighty sling, or multiple rehousings. So, if after inwardly digesting all of the good information above you think you're ready, go for it. Heck, maybe try to talk the seller down to $50, but if not your not only getting a relatively decent deal on a cool T, but your actually investing in good experience.
