Are the male and female poecilotheria regalis the same colors? I have one that is about 2.5 inch but is dark like the male on Rick West's web site. I thought it's color is to dark and might even not be a regalis. I would take a photo but is is hardly ever out in the open.

Didn't I read somewhere that the abdominal stripe on P. regalis can be used to sex individual spiders according to coloration?

Yes, the dark inner diamonds or lightinig bolt fades to the same whitish color on females. On males it remains as a dark inside of light pattern.

Now if only it were -that- simple with all the other species.

Thanks but at what size does this show up! Mine is now about 2.5 or so and is rather dark. Could this mean it is a male?

I don't know the answer to this one as I'm only just now raising my first regalis from slings. However, I do know that at 2.5" you can sex that T by moult or you can sex that T by the epiandrous fusilae method combined with examination of the epigastric furrow. The color sexual dimorphism is a nice feature of the species, but by the time it is for certain by color, you can be certain by the traditional methods as well.

I've really had trouble sexing the Poecilotheria genus. My P regalis molted yesterday, and while she (yay!) tore up her exuvia badly enough to not be able to sex from that, her lightening on the abdomen is completely white now, and she has the white belly band, so I'm confident she is a she.
The P ornata is a male, confirmed from the molt, and his lightening or diamond abdomen pattern is the black inside the white, as is my P fasciata. However, the P formosa is a male, and at 4" or so, the black inside the white is just now beginning to show.
It's so confusing!
I need a few dozen more in this genus, so I can do some studying!

Yes, studying... that's what it is when we buy new Ts.
