Whats your salinity level? They reside in brackish waters. I had one heck of a time keeping them alive long term, I actually gave up. The only fish that ever did that to me. I lost several before ever realizing they were brackish.

They would always be fine for many months, then just die seemingly out of the blue.

Sorry you lost it, but they definitely are brackish fish. They can survive extended periods of time in fresh, but require a certain degree of salinity. A quick search yielded dozens of articles describing them as brackish water fish.

Mine suddenly passed the other day as well while the other fish are ok, which makes me think these do need a little bit of salt... Sorry for your loss mate.

Sorry about your loss. Figure 8 puffers are indeed brackish, although they can be raised in freshwater when they're young. F8s need to be kept in a aquaria with the salinity of 1.005-1.008, temperature of 75-80 and a PH near 8.
LPS/LFS often sell F8s and green spotted puffers (GSPs) as freshwater fish, most of the time this is due to the store/employees lack of knowledge of the species or misconception.
What were your water parameters like and what were you feeding your puffer?

There is an inherent problem with warm brackish water fish. It's an incubator for a vast array of hostile organisms. You cannot use sea water as the organisms in it is a virtual death sentence for your animal. (No natural checks and balance) You have to constantly monitor the water and hope that your animal hasn't introduced organisms. Huge pain in the tukus and full time job often considered best left to aquaculture experts.

It's highly recommended you get a full water testing kit for Ph, salinity etc. The chemical sight glass ones are relatively cheap but messy and need refilling. The electronic ones cost an arm and a leg and sales rights on your first three children.
Speaking from experience, saline in a synthetic environment tends to destabilize extremely fast when something goes wrong. Much more so than fresh water environments. Destabilize as in healthy that morning, and die off in the evening. Nitrogen is the major culprit but there are others. The rot sets in with the saline water. Say dissolved nitrogen suddenly starts to peak. You treat with calcium carbonate. Dissolved oxygen starts dropping from the additional chemicals in the water, Ph spikes and you suddenly need to flush the entire system as your water has turned into chemical soup. With fresh water that's pretty easy but who keeps 20 or 50 gallons of oxygenated saline water on hand as saline water does not store well.

PS NEVER use compressed air to hot charge the water with extra oxygen. It adds nitrogen as well. Short term works okay but long term is just plain bad news.
