Hey guys, as my collection is expanding I’d like to start using a cheaper substrate. Although with adults/favorites, I’ll use other sorts of substrate (black/red colored sand, Exo Terra Stone Desert, etc.), but for young scorpions, was thinking of getting something more economical. Landed on play sand as I feel that there’s a good number of people who use it (would mix it with peat moss/Reptisoil/coco fiber or whatever I have on hand). However, I was wondering what do you do to prep it/clean it?

There’s a brand I’m looking at sold in Menards and here’s what the info says:
This finely gradated and clean play sand is used in children's sand boxes. Our beautiful sand is the perfect texture for your young artists to create castles and sand sculptures. It is safe and fun for everyday play in sandboxes, or for use in your landscape or garden.
Screened and washed
  • Covers approximately 3 sq. ft. at 2" depth
  • Manufacturer may vary by location
  • Sand is a natural product that will vary in color and size. Please visit your local Menards® store to view actual product.
So based on this, what would you do before using it? How would you go about ‘washing’ it if you needed to?

Thanks in advance!

For my arid scorpions, as well as sand spiders, I have used / am using white play sand (from other brand though) with no problems yet.

I'm making a paludarium and I'm going to use some sand I got from Home Depot, I think it was called play sand. Looking on their site and I can't find the one I bought but I think it was on a brownish bag with clear areas. Huge bag for only about $4 I think but you need to clean it REALLY well cause it's super dusty. I just put it in a 5gal bucket and washed it out with the hose until the water was mostly clear, and then laid it out on a big trash bag to dry in the sun, and in the garage when it was raining.
