are there any negative affects to using pill bugs to get rid of mold and mites? I don't have any major problems yet, what I thought was mold turned out to be spider s**t in my g. rosea tank. I did see a mite in my trapdoor tank though so I'd like to put a couple of pill bugs in there to get rid of any mites. How long should I leave them in there? And how big of pill bugs should I put in there, adults or immatures?

hey

Pill bugs work well but be sure to feed your T or trap door enough so it wont be hungry and eat the pill bug. I had this happened and it really sucked because the pill bugs were doing a great job at decomposing cricket remains. any ways I dont think they work for mites and mold... at least I have never tried it.
well any ways I'm sure other people have something to say so
have a nice day

I recently had someone tell me pill bugs eat mites but I can't find anyone or any information that backs up their assertion.

That would be because they were wrong. Pill bugs do not eat mites. What they do is compete for the same food that the mites eat. Pill bugs clean out organic remains, thereby leaving nothing for the mites to eat and they die off. :)

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that they ate mites... I had read in T.T.K.G. that they were beneficial in helping to clean up a Ts tank and could live harmoniously with the T. I have never had mites, thank God.

I had put three to four in each enclosure according to the size of the roly-poly and the size of the enclosure. Some of them died though! Maybe my Ts are just TOO clean!;)

Forgive me if I misled you!:8o

hey yeah its ok but I wouldn't recommend it since it might have some hitchickers or maybe the T will eat the pill bug and it might have been exposed to pesticides any ways I got them from outside because i dont use any insect killer stuff on my yard and umm yeah have a nice day

Not at all, just something you can try to combat mites.

I'm aware of the info in TTKG about pill bugs. The person whom I spoke with is on a Roach board and currently has about 15 roach colonies and claimed that pill bugs actually eat the mites....My Ts don't have any mites but my roach enclosure does and they are harder to combat with the roaches because the nymphs drag peices of catfood , cheerios and peices of fresh food out of the food dishes and down into the substrate where they hide. I'm getting them under control though by drying everything out and turning the substrate with a spoon to pick out the foodstuffs.
