very cool snakes, thats the first time I've seen an african house snake. BTW How is that snake? Like in temper and the rest of that. You have alot of snakes how often do you feed them?

My African House Snake is very calm....and from what I know it is pretty consistent with the species. Very easy to care for....much like a cornsnake but with slightly higher temps & humidity. They are very underrated IMO. The only things that I don't like about them is that they can be finicky eaters sometimes......they often change their taste in prey. For instance, mine will eat mice one week and refuse mice the next feeding....then it will want a rat and so on. LOL....other than that they are awesome snakes. Luckily I have plenty of both rodents to keep him happy. :)

I feed my snakes on varying time periods. The colubrids get fed every 5 days because colubrids have a much faster metabolism than boids.

My boids get fed from every7-14 days depending on species and size/age.

BigSams krazy.:}

I have two Western Hognose snakes. One is eating a f/t fuzzy every 7 days( the male). The female stopped eating about a month ago. She's nice and plump so I'm not worried about her starving to death, BUT....

Any thoughts?:?

Are you keeping them together? What are her temps? Are her bowel movements normal?

Their not in the same enclosure.
Temps are 79 cool side. 89 warm side. Water dish.
The male is kept the same. It might be a tad warm?
Poop looked ok, I guess. I'll have look closer next time she goes.

Yeah....might be a tad warm, but I don't think that would cause her to go off feed. Just keep offering her food and she'll come around. It may just be a seasonal thing.

Those snakes are beautiful! I think I can get into snakes in a serious way! Esp all those Corn varieties. I love my corn snake, for a reptile he seems quite affectionate! ;)
I am thinking about getting a couple of other species. I would love a Milk snake, especially one with the orange banding instead of yellow.
There was another snake I saw at my local supplier but I cant find out what it is called as it was sold the next time I went there. It looked almost like a cornsake, slightly smaller (could have been a juvenile) and it was a slate grey colour with intense scarlet saddles down its back. It was extremely beautiful and I would love to get hold of one.

The snake you are describing sounds like a Grey-Banded Kingsnake.

Richard: That's def a greybanded kingsnake, those guys are gorgeous!

David: Aside from the female going off lately, have you had any other trouble feeding your hognoses? I'd love to get one but I'm a little wary due to the preference for toads. I have heard that westerns are lots easier to get eating mice than easterns (which is too bad because i'd really love a black phase eastern!)

I alos notice yours look alot diff than the western my friend has, its all over colored about the shade of the saddles of the one in the pic

My hognose is as good an eater as any snake I've ever had. He is a little piggy, lol. Western Hogs don't eat toads as much as their eastern counterparts, which is why they are the most common and easy to keep Hognose. They do just fine on a diet of rodents. I've heard babies can be picky, but if you get an established CBB snake, you shouldn't have any problems.

There is alot of variance in color with the Westerns.....mine is fairly light from what I've seen. Some are darker, some are lighter you know.

you probably spend alot of time feeding all your snakes, It's hard enough for me to feed 3 snakes and I can only image how hard it must be feeding all those snakes. :)

Nahh, its not too bad at all. They don't all eat on the same day, so that helps spread the load out, lol.

David, I really liked your pics. I have never kept a snake, but I am seriously considering getting one. I have heard corn snakes are a pretty good starter species. What do you guys recommend? Thanks.

Corn snakes are one of, if not the best starter snake out there! Very easy to care for and TONS of different morphs to choose from. :)
