Nice!!! Did you make most of it for it?

In the twelve years I've had my rosie, it hasn't made a single burrow :/

It did however dig for the first time the other day! I'm hopin it's going to lay a tasty egg, seeing as it mated in october... I shan't be holding my breath though

the only part that i made for him/her was puttin the cork bark hideout under the potting soil and he/she decided to burrow after that. He/She layed quite a silk fence to hold the soil up in front of His/her burrow...its pretty neat hopefully I can get to sex him/her soon hence im in the learnin process of sexing G.Roseas. Im leanin towards female right now after all the studying I have been doin today

I spent $6 on half of a freaking log (I'll never pay that much for a piece of wood again.) for my rosie, thinking it would love hiding in it. I was wrong. It went under it when I first got it, but then stopped using it completely.

I ended up cutting it length wise and using it to make hides for small aboreals.

I've got a 2 year old spiderling that has mad a very nice burrow in her 40g size vial. It starts on the right side of the vial and spirals down to the floor of the vial like a corkscrew. The base is comepletely cleared out. Seems she's webbed the peat moss together for added strength and leaves the vial side clear so I have a good viewing port for her. From the top and including the length of the spirals I believe she has created a 6" deep burrow in a vial that is only 4" deep.

Good idea since we have learned that rosies in the wild live in burrows. I did the same, (with an inexpensive toliet paper roll :) )for my Usambara, but he has since built his own after molting in it.............. I think a place to hide makes the T WAY more happy!!

wow with both of my Roseas Ive never had a problem with them usin their hide outs for burrowing .Actually I lied, at first my youngest G.rosea didnt burrow up until now and the Tarranium has been up for about 2 weeks.Anyways I hape your logs came in usful cause god knows that stuff costs a ton of money:D

Herpinvertgirl,

you know what is better that an old toilet paper roll??
cutting a plastic Solo cup in half and then you dony have to worry about humidity or moisture eatin it up

Pyscho,
I keep the P. Murinus tank pretty dry, Dante NEVER goes to the side with the water dish. Only time I've ever seen him drink was right before moulting. He took a ten minute drink and hasn't touched it since....... Didn't have to worry about the moisture factor at all :) . Thanks for the tip though!!

One question... I provided a nice dark hide for the curly haired tarantula. Is that good enough? Should I allow her to burrow if she wants to? She seems happy, and wanders around the enclosure at night in search of food. She eats like a pig! Plus she started a cool wall around the hide. But I value her sense of security overall........ Is that good enough for her?

she sounds pretty content with what you have provided for her, she eats, is active and webs, what more can you ask for.

P.S.-alotta people will tell you that alotta their T's dont hide

my rosie has never used her hide to my knowledge, she either sits on top of it or at the other end of the tank. Ive never seen her dig or move the substrate around in the tank either.

My curly on the other hand loves to move stuff around in his tank. He never seems to build a burrow though - just digs seemingly random trenches around the place.

I guess a hide is needed in all tanks but if they dont use it its not a worry.

Stu.

True, but I'm still an overprotective newbie with only two tarantulas so far....... :) If I only had the budget for more!! Thinking about getting a Pinktoe from the petstore, they have a pretty nice one. Thanks for the reply!! And they also sold me a rather large curly at a rose hair price cause they though it was a rose. *L* My gain, right?

I've seen T's like that in their burrows at night waiting for a meal to walk by.

I have found that the tank's air humidity has a large effect on my Ts behaviour. My B.smithi in particular can be tempted out of it's burrow by misting the tank heavily. She'll retreat again when the air becomes dry again. Her substrate is bone dry on top and moist at the bottom, allowing her to dig to the correct humidity for her needs. She has a water dish if I get it too wrong.

My G.rosea used to live in her retreat most of the time, so I added a load of substrate to her tank, hoping she would burrow. Since that day she has never entered the shelter again, always sitting out in the open. I'm hoping that one day soon the substrate will have dried out enough for her to consider her alternatives.

one of my roseas digs more than my huahini... its crazy. She just made this deep deep burrow, no cork bark, no log, no half-flower-pot, just put her in the new cage, and she started digging.

consequently, one of my EC E.campestratus has been laying down a suspicious amount of webbing, and her abdomen has gotten HUGE.. hopeing for an eggsac.

anyways, i'll take some pics of the rosea burrow later on tonite.

its too beautiful in minnesota right now to be indoors taking pictures of Ts. that goes for all of you, too ;)
