i cared for a alligator snapper for awhile it was a fun experience
i wish i worked at a zoo to get to see these guys daily

Good reading! Definitely one of the most interesting fresh water turtles imo. I experienced the cold tolerance of the Common Snapper when I was a kid, I was really young, maybe 9 or 10 and had found a baby in the local creek. I had it in shallow water at the time, for some reason I had taken the aquarium to the garage. That winter we had a hard freeze and I forgot the turtle was in the garage. I went in the garage and saw that the water was frozen solid, the turtle looked like an animal they suspend in those glass paper weights that were so popular decades ago. I was really depressed about it, but I thawed out the water and it was fine! Just something more, I remember watching a nature show where they had captured live Alligator Snappers and took X-ray pics of them. They found a musket ball from the Civil War embedded in the shell of one of them! And who knows how old it was when it was shot, some must be really old!
