Trying to decide between getting Phormictopus cancerides or Pamphobeteus sp. Mascara. They both seem to have purple hues … but which is prettier?

That is too subjective. If you like purple, what about Phormicotpus sp. Dominican Purple?
Ha I just made your choice harder.

Individuals of Phormictopus cancerides can display a wide variety of colors. Some are bronze, some are more purple, some are more brown. With Pamphobeteus sp. ‘Mascara’, its a consistent color if that’s what you’re after. My opinion is, if the ‘Mascara’ is a great price, jump on it and add on the Phormictopus at a later time. In that time, you can keep an eye out for specific locales/species (sp. ‘Dominican Purple’, sp. ‘Green’, etc.). They’re both kinda similar in care with ‘Mascara’ being more flighty.

Matter of taste, I like Phormictopus... But behaviorally these spiders are like OWs. Very, very, very defensive, not a beginner spider.

I’d say it differs. I’ve only had one ornery one and the tens of other Phormictopus I’ve kept would much rather retreat if given the chance. .

But good point either way, your individual may vary so prepare for ‘anything’.

I can't confirm that at all. I breed Ph. c. and never had "gentle" animals with me. No club colleague has ever said anything like that either...

I’m just staying my experience so take it as you will. I don’t really do much in their enclosure other than feed and fill up water dish, but again it’s my experience with the species/individuals I’ve kept. Not discrediting your experience whatsoever as I’m sure since you’ve bred them you have experience with many more individuals, but I’m just stating what I experienced.

Of course, why not. That was no attack...
