Good morning, spider aficionados! I brought home and rehoused this beautiful sling 12 days ago, but she still has not settled. Spends all her time at the top of the lid. Is something amiss with my setup?
Details:
1” fat Sling (ate once 10 days ago)
5.5 oz condiment cup, ventilation set up l@nsky moisture dependent sling style. Bottom layers moist, dried out on top.
Hide (that is a bit too large), with leaf cover and a wee bit of moss on top.
Tattoo cup water dish. Thank you.

I got the SO some of these a year or so ago such good looking t's. Your set up looks fine to me though all I can think of is maybe put the vivs somewhere dark and quiet in the hope we come down and make a burrow. Maybe add a few extra bits fir a bit more cover .

@The Spider House how did you set the p pack up? It's been a while n I forget 😆

My two are P. Cancerides, and they did some pretty heavy excavation in their enclosures. I set them up with a slightly oversized enclosure as slings because they had a strong appetite and grow quickly. They were mostly fossorial for me as slings and still spend a fair bit of time in the burrow underground. They are approximately 5"now, I think. I kept the sub somewhat on the moist side- the seller stated they aren't super picky about moisture levels though.

Looks perfectly fine to me for a spider that size. Must just be a spider that settles late into her new dwellings.

All of mine are on a mix of top soil and Coco fibre for sub. I have some dried leaf litter and some cork bark that they happily just burrow under.

Your set up looks fine to me.

Nothing looks amiss to me. Sometimes spiders just take their time settling in.

I thought at first maybe the substrate was too moist for its liking, but even after the top dried out, she’s still not wanting to touch it.

Mine didn't seem bothered at all by damp substrate. But I guess yours could feel differently about it.

If you flip the cup upside down, the sling will be on the bottom instead of the top. Maybe try that? :D

Looks the same as I've set mine up before, nothing to worry about!

I recieved my sp purple sling 9 days ago. This is my 1st phormic sling. I started mine in a larger enclosure. For a day or 2, it was roaming around like a madman trying to escape lol. I put them in my closet to let them settle for a few days. That calmed than down quite a bit. I've fed them 3x so far, and it has no issues whatsoever locating prey. It started excavating in the burrow I provided, and it now stays down whenever I open the enclosure (good thing because they are pretty darn quick) This species is a ruthless assasin when it comes to dinner time. I'll post a picture of the enclosure when I get home.

Instant fossorial!

Seriously though I’ve only had 16 in my life, none have taken anywhere near this long to settle.

Some just prefer to be up higher - I've got Grammostola slings that constantly hang on the side of the enclosure near the lid. As long as it's eating and behaving normally otherwise, it's not a big deal. Phormictopus grow fast, so it won't be in the condiment cup for more than a few months, and as it grows it'll spend more time on solid ground.

Mine appreciated cover, both made hides out of fake leaves at first before burrowing.

I've even put giant fake leaves over the outside of the enclosure to block light without blocking ventilation, and although different species, got right to work on construction.

Substrate too soft?

Sub was packed down. I’ll try adding some leaves and as you and @Charliemum also suggested, somewhere a bit darker and quieter.

You can always try putting little ones viv in a small thick cardboard box with one side cut off , if you place the box where the viv goes then place the viv inside, open side of the box facing you and viv in the corner of the box, it will not only make it darker for little one but it will deaden some of the noise and vibrations and still allows you to see baby. 😊 I have used this trick a couple of times and it works well or has for me.
