My sister in law found a large P audax the other day, and captured it for me. It made an eggsac inside the tupperware container that she was holding it in. Any special instructions for the mom to be? I brought her home today, and took the lid off to check her out. The sac is anchored around the container rim. She won't leave it. Should I just leave the lid off? I am planning on releasing them into the spider room anyway, but am wondering if there is enough for them to eat? Maybe I should let her go outside? Anyway, looking for advice from others that have gone though a P audax eggsac before!

the babies will be able to get out of "normal" sized airholes, trust me =P

for glass walking babies of that size i make only a few air holes that are maybe 1/4" or so, and then jam them full of cotton.

have you ever kept jumpers before? they make a house that is a sack like web structure, might that be it? all the eggs sacs i've seen (though not from P. audax, specifically, but other Phidippus) were built inside the house sack.

I realize that they can get out of pretty much anything ;)
I had my S-I-L put a stocking over the entire container, in case they hatched before I could get over there and pick her up.
Here's the best pic I could get, which is not very good. I just put a cricket in, and she is gobbling it up.
I believe that is an eggsac, since we've kept a non gravid female before, and her 'house' webbing was different than this. Also, her abdomen was quite large before she made the sac, telling me that she was gravid.....

fully agree to the abdomen thing.

coolness, then :)

i'm sure i don't have to tell you, but those are decently trade and sell-able :)

i've seen them go for $10-$15 for adults, and they should hit adult in a year or so, i would guess :)

i love the metallic chelicerae of the Phids. I have a cool sort of like, impressionistic pic of one, where all you can see is the silhouette/outline, and then a huge metallic blue-green glare. it was neat cuz the jar the spider was in magified the colorful part of the chilicerae all out of proportion. i'll try to find a way to transfer it to an online computer :)

i don't know if i would release them into the spider room though. i imagine they are venomous enough to other inverts to possibly kill one of your pet pet type of pets =P

i do try to keep Pholcus phalangoides in my bedroom/bug room (or both, when they are seperate room). Daddy long legs spiders. Awesome bugs, keep flying pests down better than sticky pest strips, IMO. but they are kind of "unslightly" as one of my female friends put it =P

hmmm, maybe I'll put the stocking back on the container then! Had no idea they are a marketable item.....
I also have plenty of Pholcus phalangoides loose in the entire house!

marketable, yes, that is the word i wanted earlier :)

ah, if you already have PP DDLS (heh, try saying that five times fast) then i think they would eventually dine on most of the P.a's

You might want to talk to some of the dealers that carry true spiders and feel out interest, if you are interested :) I have a couple ppl looking for local inverts too, that might be interested. I'll PM you if you would like.
