That's right, if you live on Long Island, this Summer we should all finally be seeing the Periodical cicadas. They were supposed to emerge last year, but very few emerged due to a cold July, and not over all of long Island. And according to records, in 1987 not many emerged either as expected on LI, either because of poor breeding conditions or something else.

I would love to see this as I dont remember the last swarm we had in 87' for our area, and it's fun to see if anyone can find the rare blue-eyed Periodical's.

i think the blue eyed cicadas are actually old dead cicadas, i have some dead mounted periodicals that i caught with red eyes but the eyes turned a grayish blue

Cicada's have arrived in Ridge, NY

Lots of carcasses found on the lawn. They have red eyes and they are damn UGLY! But, I'm looing forward to hearing the males make their sounds!

West Virginia has a huge cicada hatching is taking place. My cousin and his wife called to ask me what these insects were. I told them it sounded like they were periodical cicadas. Later they heard from someone there that it was the year of the locust.

My inlaws place in Kentucky is swamed with them. There are tens of thousands of exuvium on the lawn and huge swarms of cicadas! They are so loaud that you can hear nothing else and it actually hurts your head after a few minutes! Really cool. Most of them I have seen up close when they were emerging were the red eyed variety, but I did see on blue eyed. South central KY is definately having an excellent emergance.
