If temps reach over 75 degrees they get very aggressive and hard to work with, I was actually stung by one of my own when I was working in the cage, something they tolerate very well most of the time. Also later that they I walked by a wild colony and got tagged on the ear, so bear in mind they get really cranky when its really hot.

Metabolism boost maybe?
I don't know most likely a combination of being upset due to the weather and what you have stated a metobolic boost.

Here we call them "resistors" because of the red with the yellow stripe.

Its interesting you mention temperatures and aggression. Here it gets to well over 30 deg Celsius (85 - 90 deg F.) and they are always aggressive, even attacking when you are far away. But when the season gets colder they calm down.

I didn't know people kept wasps as pets. Would be neat to see how you keep them. I was excited to see a small beehive had been made on a bush near my house. I've never really seen one up close before (well not too close..) I think they neighbors had it removed though. :-(
