Would slings of this species be a stupid way to get a first or second time introduction to arboreal tarantulas? I hear pokie venom is pretty potent. I had originally wanted irmina. Now that I think about it...bite reports for irmina appear more or less the same as those for regalis. I'm guessing though regalis gets bigger if anything it is less aggressive than irmina? Now, of course, I sure don't plan to get bit.

Thoughts appreciated. They are beautiful T's, though admittantly I like P. irmina's color scheme better. If I don't like them I will trade them for some other species.

Esp. like to hear from relative noobs just getting to dealing with the faster spiders.

i have 6 P. irminia slings and 6 P. regalis slings. i recently moved the P. regalis slings to medium size deli cups only because they kept coming out when i fed or misted them. They would run up my arm but so far aren't nearly as jumpy as my crazy A. versicolor slings. i am hoping they will settle into their new homes and not be in such a hurry to come out now because i don't really *plan* to handle them - they just cruise on their own!

The P. irminia's definately seem more flighty but they usually retreat back into their well established hides. i have had them a few months longer and they have never tried to leave when i was feeding/misting. i recently moved 2 of the slings to different enclosures and it was uneventful.

i honestly have had no trouble adjusting to either of these 'fast' aboreal slings. As i mentioned - they are actually easier than my crazy 6 A. versicolor slings! Good thing they're so cute!! i have a 5.5" female P. pederseni who is very compliant and easy to work with when needed. She has never given me a threat pose.

i have only had T's again since April and have never had species such as these before. i guess its just whatever you feel comfortable with.

As far as venom goes, i'm pretty sure the Pokies are much more venomous than the P. irminia's but maybe somebody more experienced can comment.

P.irmina is more defensive then P.regalis, but regalis I would say is much faster on the run. If you get slings of either, you'll have time to adjust as they grow so I say go for it. Once either of these species makes a hide they'll just bolt back into it at the slightest disturbance so you really don't have anything to worry about. What kind of Ts do you have anyway?

P. Regalis was my first T, and while he could really boogie, i found him to be pretty shy any time his enclosure was opened. he preffered to run into his hide or crawl under a plant than be anywhere near me. he was fast, but he only ever ran o whereever he thought no one could see him.

Regalis is generally pretty calm. Any of my new world terrestrials are more aggressive. So, regalis will definitely be easier to deal with. Of course they have very potent venom, but if you are careful, there's nothing to worry about.

I never had a Poecilotheria either and thinking of getting one in the future.

I' m thinking of getting either a P. Ornata or a P. Regalis. Which one would you guys recommend for a first Poecilotheria?

thanks,

Fred

I have a regalis and a sri lanka and they are just fine for first or second time tarantulas the only thing is that they are really fast. when i open the cage to my regalis he runs away from me rather than toward me. so more than likely they will only bother you if they need to defend them selves. don't try to hold them and you'll be fine.

Yeah, regalis is often considered the calmest poecilotheria(plus, it is usually the easiest to find).

Well I would say more tolerant. P.ornata is calm, but when messed around with, just like any other T will become very defensive. As long as you let them build a retreat you have nothing to worry about. Hm, both isn't such a bad idea..{D

Regalis then Ornata. They both can be calm but Regalis is a better starter. Ornata in my opinion can be much faster to when they decide to run from something. But their striking colors make it well worth it.
Heck buy them both lol.
