P irminia enclosure size

It seems my P irminia has become a 4.5” MM. I need to rehouse him from his little 6x6x9, but my 8x8x12 is only mid-side slide opening and I don’t want to try to get him out of that when the time comes for him to travel to his GF (if I find one for him).

Questions: Is the 12x12x20 I already have too big for this 4.5” guy? Is buying a dual opening 8x8x12 preferable (Exo Terra Nano Tall)?

Thank you for your advice.

I'm doing the same math over here lol. I have some off-brand knockoff of a nano tall hanging around...setting that up for him is a good thought. Mine being of course in the same kinda 6x6x9 bin too...

I have a side-slide-opening one that's like...6x10x12 or something weird like that, but I was planning to use it for the A. purpurea that's like half an inch bigger than I thought :| it's the one that's always webbing onto the ceiling.

12x12x20 ...imho sounds a little big for this dude. Pretty sure my P. irminia girl is comfortably 5" now and she still looks very happy in the 8x8x12. I honestly might wait and see how cramped my dude looks in his 6x6x9 when he's out walking around before I decide what his next stop is.

Yeah, I was thinking it was too big as well, but it was intended for “her” adult enclosure. His legs are so, so long and he looks cramped in where he is now. Guess I’ll bite the bullet and get another 8x8x12 that has the dual openings. Have to make another lid, too.

My girl is currently in the 8x8x12 version of that same 6x6x9 bin, if you're looking for a little cheaper and less work (no lid replacement). Actually, so's my versi but I put extra vent holes at substrate level for him...didn't bother adding them for the MF irminia and she's been fine in there for a year now.

8,8,12 should be fine, larger won’t hurt

That was the first thing I looked for as I really liked this 6x6x9, too, but I couldn’t find it? Same brand?

If I can get by with the larger one, I found a great piece of cork that would fill a fair amount of the 8x8x12 enclosure, but fits perfect in the larger. I know he won’t be interested in eating much now, but do you think he’d have issues finding his food in the larger enclosure? I know you’ve had an MM P irminia as well.

I shipped my male out for breeding!

They won’t eat too often. I’d keep him in the smaller setup

The males will eat more shortly after maturing, and the further past their ultimate molt they get, the less interest they have in food. I would feed as much as it will eat for the first 2 or 3 feedings after molting, just to get him as plump as possible before he decides he's done eating. I agree that you should also keep the MM in as small of an enclosure as is practical - you want them to have enough space to stretch out, etc., but don't give them tons of space to roam around - they will roam, but if kept in smaller enclosures, they tend to do it less. Lower mileage roaming = longer life span and more energy when it's time to meet a female.

What everyone recommended I say the same.

A 4.5 or 5 inch arboreal is perfectly at home in an Exo Terra 8x8x12.

I have a new 12x12x18 sitting here for a long time as I anticipated my female P. irminia to grow more. That size enclosure is more for a maybe 6 definitely 7 inch arboreal.

I think she's comfortable staying at 5 inches for a long time. So now I have a new empty Exo Terra collecting dust 😆

Advice requested again on this one. My MM irminia ate one largish cricket in the three weeks past molt and went back to hiding. Won’t take another (at least not as of yet). Do you recommend I go on and move him to his larger enclosure now, or wait it out another week to see if he will eat again?
Thank you for your advice.

Well well well........I just happen to have a mature female irminia that already produced a phantom sac a couple of months back.

Wish I wanted to pair her. She's very healthy.

You should be able to rehouse your irminia as soon as it is finished eating but never hurts to wait a day or two.

And I’m headed to your state next month. Don’t worry, I wouldn’t actually try to sneak him on a plane, lol. He’s only eaten the once, so that’s where I have pause. I was so excited to see his legs sticking out of his hunting tube and planned on power feeding him as long as he’d eat. He refused after 1. I feel moving him will likely cause him to fast, whereas maaaaybe he’ll eat again with the comfort of his thick web sock in his small enclosure. It might not matter either way. My first MM. This not eating thing is stressful.

Hahaha.....TSA seems to only focus on liquids. You could probably walk right through security with the irminia in a travel enclosure and they would focus on your drink if you have one like coffee or something.

They stopped accepting emotional support animals or you could claim that 🤣🤣🤣.

Yeah they'd be worried about his water dish 🤣

Mine is still sequestered in his fortress doing weird stretches... But like... You know he's on borrowed time now, and you know they can go a long, long time without needing food as long as they have water. You know exactly how to take care of him -- don't sweat details that may or may not buy him a few extra days. He's already had a good life. ☺

Easy for me to say I guess when mine hasn't come out yet, but I'm sure it will any day now.

Yeah, I know you’re right. I’ve only had my guy for about 6 1/2 months and I was trying to give him a few more days. I thought, fatten him up to give him the energy for the best chance at not getting eaten and coming back to me…to die shortly thereafter from old age. Live fast, die young, right? I only saw the gangly legs once and found his molt tossed out the next day. Otherwise, he’s hiding out, too.

I transported slings and jumping spiders through TSA this summer. Requested a hand screening instead of an xray and just had to wait for a TSA supervisor brave enough to handle the spiders through their containers.

They're carry on luggage.

Mine hasn't even taken out the trash yet. Lazy bum.
Bet he’s the type that will leave his dirty socks on the coffee table, too.. ;-)
Well, I tossed the cricket in with hope of response. The first time I did this, I retrieved the cricket living wild and free the next morning, still no sign of him. The second time I tossed one in, I came back to check and was thrilled to see legs stick out of the tube. I came home to the old clothes and a piece of moss he obviously didn’t care for tossed out (moss in the water dish, of course..where it belongs) Maybe yours needs the food wafted under his nose, too, lol.
