Is it possible to keep two rats outside in a garage area in New York? I know you're all thinking that who in the right mind would put two animals outside in a place like New York where it gets below freezing in the winter. I actually have to move them out of my house because my family is getting allergic and I have a garage but its not insulated and I was wondering if it would be possible for them to live in the garage with a few towels wrapped around it. If its really not possible to keep them outside in garage then I will just give them to a friend to keep. any suggestions on how to keep them warm? Thanks

Unless you can keep the garage as warm as a house then no, you won't be able to keep them out there in the winter. Are you sure it the rats and not the bedding your family is having problems with? What are you keeping them on?

I seriously doubt your whole family is suddenly allergic to rats. My vote goes to dusty substrate, possible ammonia fumes if you don't clean often enough, or something completely unrelated to the rats that none of you are aware of yet because rats are the "obvious" answer.

Or they just don't like your rats.

Also yes, if you put a cage in the garage with a couple towels around it in the middle of winter, they will probably get extremely sick and/or die.

I think it's very possible they just don't like the rats, Is it possible I can keep them in the garage during the summer and then during the winter keep them inside and or wait till winter and then give to a friend?

If the garage isn't insulated, the summer heat could kill them just as easily I'm afraid. :(

I'd advise trying to get your family to be honest with you if you feel they're lying just to get rid of a pet they don't like, or try different beddings/cleaning up more often if you think that might be the problem. Also look into other possibilities, like seasonal allergies or something new in the apartment.

I vote for handing them over to someone who can better care for them.

It also sounds kind of..odd...to me as to the reasons behind this. I would think if someone was allergic to the rats, it would be obvious. No one can fake an allergy that good, and if they are, that's kind of sad and they should be given to a different home regardless.

I am just going to get rid of them, my family just seems not to want them in the house anymore, they won't give me a clear reason. All that matters to them is that the rats are no longer in the house. Thank you all for your responses.
