Hi Guys
Watching Mark O'Sheas big adventure on animal planet he was in Australia outside of Sydney looking for Mountain Blue or Blue Mountain funnelwebs absouletly beautiful creatures. The ones they found were amazing and they were doing this for a venom study and they found a moulted funnelwebs fang it was huge. I woulden't mind keeping these spiders but would i be allowed to and what would the requirements be? thanks.:)

The hardest part is to find them for sale outside Australia.
Besides from that they can be kept pretty much the same way as a theraphosid that requires medium humidity and temperature

as far as i know you can't get them outside of Australia at all. they're illegal to export. probebly becasue they do so well in such a mild climate that they could survive most anywhere. and no one wants a colony of highly venomous spiders in their back yard.
you could always move to australia. but i hear the male to female ratio is something like 4 to 1. :(

I have kept Atrax robustus so its not impossible to get hold of them.
I know there are a few in Europe and they have been bred a few times aswell here. Its illegal as you say to export them but so are blondi from Venezuela or poecs from India and people dont think twice about that.
Australia have the export laws to protect their wildlife but if thats a good way or not. Steve know more about that then I do, but my personal view is that controlled export of captive breed animals is the best way to protect wildlife from exploitation.

The Australian laws are much stricter on herps than on inverts. It's possible to export proven captive bred invertebrates legally, but in the case of Atrax they're banned by Australian postal regs because of safety in shipping.

At least, I think that's how it goes! Steve?

The strictness of these requirements depends on wich part of the country your from. Here in the west midlands it varies wildly. In Dudley, it is almost impossible to get a license at all. They require you to keep all the creatures in a seperate building with special safety doors so that nothing can escape. In Telford, you apply for it and you get it a few days later, no check ups, nothing.
I am hoping to apply for one next year. I live almost exactly halfway between the two! Hope I get the telford preferance!!

Exactly right both Lelle and Wade. To the guy who believes there is a ratio of 4 men to 1 woman in Oz, you keep believing that and we'll do just fine down here ;) LOL

Oh, the Blue Mountains funnel-web is Hadronyche versuta.

Cheers,
Steve

Atrax

I dont know much about them, but one thing that impressed me was watching ole croc hunter dealt with one. The same guy who goes climbing a tree to chase a mamba snake gave Atrax a wide berth

I thought it was the other way around now, with more women than men. :? ;) Which I'm sure the men don't mind at all.
