Hi there,

I recently acquired some Orthoporus ornatus millipedes (texas gold phase) and have heard that they can be difficult in captivity. For me, mine have already mated and laid eggs and they are eating everything in sight. What is it that is the problem with these guys? Does it come later?

Whoa how did you get yours to lay eggs?! I've had mine about a year and never got any plings even though I saw them mate a few times. Aside from not laying eggs and the need for more ventilation, I don't believe this species is difficult.

What is your setup like?

I have them in a XL KK with a moist bottom layer of coco coir, a dryish layer of crumbled birch, and a very dry layer of crumbled oak. They have a lot of dry oak leaves on the top and a rock that they for some reason love to sit on XD. I saw them mating on the way home from the expo that I got them from and then at home that night I was searching through the soil for one to show a friend and I saw a bunch of little brown balls which I thought were poop until I realized it was pretty hard and that they were eggs! Hopefully they hatch, have had them for a few days. When do you think they will hatch if ever? I named my male Nibbles cause he likes to nibble on my hand and the female penny just cause she looked like a penny type of gal XD. I've recently had some luck with breeding as I had two Sybilla pretiosa ooths hatch out a week ago and none have died since. Even my death feigners have larva in the sub and I am going to move them! :D so happy with all the recent success, hopefully I can unlock the secret to breeding these amazing millis!

I notice mine mostly stay on the top layer too. I wonder if I keep the lower layers too moist for them.

Good luck with your eggs!

If you're still active, I'd love for more details on your setup. Did you learn anything you'd be willing to share?

Did your Orthoporus ornatus millipede eggs ever hatch? I'm planning on purchasing a pair.

How did you ever make them lay? I want a pair but I am afraid they won't breed.

Whoa! I didn't think anyone had ever gotten eggs from these guys before.
