I want to buy a Orphnaecus dichromatus but I’m a complete beginner. Is this a foolish move?

Normally I wouldn't chime in on these questions as I can't really throw stones in situations like this due to diving headfirst into the deep end myself. Having said that, O. dichromatus is currently the species I have had the most trouble with establishing in captivity and I really can't recommend them to anyone at this point lol.

To say they're highly nervous, flighty, delicate, and easily stressed would be a categorical understatement in my opinion and in my experience.

I was able to get 5 slings secured in Europe in early 2023, which I believe were captive hatched from a gravid WC female. Of the 5, only one survived the import.

Later in the summer/fall of 2023, a few WC import females became available. Of the four I was able to acquire, only one became established in captivity. The rest all slowly perished.

Now, the two I have did end up being 1.1, so I do have hope for the future to get true CBB slings that hopefully are a bit sturdier. From my experience thus far though, those may be some long odds lol.

So I shouldn’t get this spider?

So guys, I’m a total beginner and I made the purchase of an Orphaneus dichromata not knowing much of them (thinking they’re ok for me), along with a Vitalius chromatus. It’s too late to get a refund as they are already on the way for delivery, so what do I do? 😅

Many thanks in advance.

Find someone with experience who can care for them

What made you think they were fine, then changed your mind??

Why didn't you research first on that tarantula before buying?

I researched first before I bought my first T which was a Tliltocatl albopilosus. I selected that tarantula as it was what I was comfortable with starting out for me as a beginner arachnoculturist.

Wish you were in the U.S. I would definitely buy it from you. That's the only described Orphaneus genus outside of the Phillipines residing in New Guinea from what I understand.

That would be a big no. This species is super fast, overly defensive, very agile and should only be kept by advanced hobbyists with a lot of experience with Old World Ts. Back in the day, I got one of the last Indo to USA imports of this species and Selenocosmia arndsti. Both were like a combination of Bruce Lee, Lucifer and Rosie O'Donnell. :) They will raise your blood pressure and confirm to your family and friends that tarantulas are evil.
