Hey all, I'm new. My fascination in spiders has just recently hit an all new high and now I'm ready to join you all!!
I'm hoping for a tarantula next year. But atm I'm just deciding which to go for and also "practicing" on an orb weaver who made its home inside my house on my back door.
I have two sons and we have all gotten so much from doing this. We love watching her build her web and catch prey.
At the start there was two females on my door and I felt the best thing to do was to watch and not interfere. One died and thats when I realised being inside the house they weren't getting any water. The day I placed a drop of water near our last spider was a great day. She instantly ran over and started drinking!
So now she is our pet! And she now has an egg sac. Yikes!
So bcos I want her to be fit and healthy I've been searching the Internet and had some trouble finding anything to help me.
I came across your forum and decided to add some things I've learnt to the already helpful info you have.
You defo don't need to keep them in anything. Mine has been pretty happy on the door. I think so long as they are catching something they won't move on.
So about catching.. what can I feed her and how often does a small spider like this need to eat?
We all have a great time trying to catch a fly or maneuver it into her web. But this isn't ideal atm, especially with winter. Obviously not many flies about and plus they have to get into the house first. So some ideas would be great.
I also read on your forum that they won't adjust a web size. Mine has, a few times.
When there was two on the door, the one i have now was really trying to spread her web around the door. This caused the other spider to make her web smaller and smaller and eventually she moved from the door up into the corner on the wall.
The spider advanced her web all along the glass of the door. But I have an active 5 yr old who likes to run up and down the hall way and use the door to stop himself. This caused him to break her web a few times. And so she adjusted! And now avoids placing lines at the bottom of the glass.
You all probably know this! But omg. How clever.
Another thing she does is repair jobs on her web. She'll cut away a section of the web thats been damaged and rebuild it.
I just can't get over how amazing these little creatures are!
So, if your a parent and you want kids to get some joy and watch and learn about spiders, just a little orb one will do.
I've added a picture of my lite beauty.
Hope to speak to you all!
