I am looking to raise A. aurantia. Would the hammock system work? Has anyone managed to keep/raise any orbs???

OK...I'm going to bite the bullet and do trial and error (hopefully more trial:D )
I have placed mom is a 2 gallon old pickle jar with plastic lid. It really does help to heat up a Phillips screwdriver to add holes! I placed several sticks that I hope she will find acceptable, and a snack, as she has not eaten due to guarding the babes. The next step is getting the sacs, which should be easier now that mom is gone ;) I'm going to try the T. hammock system, as I have no other idea what to do. The good (?) thing is that there are 5 sacs, so with all going well, I can at least save one sac, and raise the slings. Really hope this works!!!

typically orb weavers cannot be kept in jars, as it allows them no space to create a web, their only source of sustenance. without a web, the spider usually starves, because it refuses to actively hunt. If you are serious about keeping orb weavers, tryletting her go in and empty corner, as she will need about three feet to spin her web across. Keeping them in small enclosures almost always leads to premature death.

Thank you! I'm trying to get a 55 gal tank for her, or make a custom tank that will be tall as well as wide. I'm only keeping her they for a very short time, the weather is getting so cold, I was worried. I have her in full sun in the day, but I was wondering if I should use some type of heat lamp....Do you think that would help???

True spiders are reeeeeally different from Ts... the hammock system will be useless for you: true spider sacs are a lot hardier than those of Ts, and the slings are all going to crawl off the hammock and web over the whole container. Just leave the sac lying there or hanging on some sticks for them to web on.
Also you are aware you'll get several hundred little spiders to feed right?

I'd guess the mother would do fine in a 2 gal container, but if you put her on the wall it'll be guaranteed less stress for her, easier to stick bugs in the web, and you'll get the enjoyment of a full perfect orb.
Edit: 55 gallons... excellent :)

Thank you for all the help!! She seems to be OK so far (she has set up a non-stick web of sorts) I just checked on her, and I think she might be about to lay again. I have been watching her for the last week for her to lay, as she is VERY big again, so I might get lucky and see one in the morning-if I decide to sleep, instead of staying up all night with a black light watching her. lol. I think I will get another large tank with glass lid for the sacs to hang in until they all come out. I'm going to either have to breed some fruit flies (I have done it in science classes-but I'd rather not) How big are pinhead criks??

I remember reading that somebody here set up an orb weaver in a bicycle rim w/ the spokes & hub removed. He/she hung it from the ceiling and put a little film can or something at the top for a hide.

wow! That is a cool idea! I might have to try that....

Got a bigger tank with screened lid today...still wanting a VERY large one, although I might build my own based on the instructions in one of the articles.
I think if I make a six sided tank it might work...would have to be 2-3' wide and 2' tall (I'm guessing) I'll see how it goes...
