My uncle's house is constantly under attack by these strange wasp-type creatures that are colored distinctly orange. Okay, they don't actually really ever bother us but they're annoying as all heck. I tried looking up anything I could find on them but the only thing I could find was something about orange wasps in Australia, anyone have any ideas?

Do they loo like this?

If they do, that's just a local "red" wasp. The name is misleading as only older ones are red. They are freaking out for some reason this year around Nashville. They eat those tent caterpillars in the area. Hope this helped!

Yikes, sorry I didn't check back. And yes, they look exactly like that. There's a small nest right above my front porch. 8(

They're not so bad. They just seem to love divebombing close to my face and then disappearing again. 8[ There's a lot of strange critters in Nashville, including GIGANTIC pholcids.

They are a Polistes paper wasp. Generally content to leave you alone some of the species do pack a good sting.
