I rescued 6 of those little guys last year. There mother got hit by a car and they were just wandering around in the street. Two of them got carried away by ravens. They are very cute. I wish a could have kept one. :(

awwww and eewww at the same time :?
I agree, minus the "eewww". ;) I think they're uniformly cute. Plus, you've got to hand it to the opossums for being the only marsupials to survive the placental onslaught in the new world.

Gorgeous. Why are these not more popular as pets? What's the down side?

Well all the ones I've seen are mean. They are pretty wild.

well they kinda expell this gross yellow stuff out of thier "hoohas" when you handle them, kinda like a hamster costantly poops when you hold them. that might be 1 reason.

Encountering wild possums doesn't leave many people with the mental room to consider them good pet animals. Friendly critters they ain't.

Friendly critters they ain't? Opossums are a blast! We have more than half a dozen of these guys at the zoo. They are some of my favorite animals to work with. If you get them as babies they are super laid back and very inquisitive. Never have they offered to bite. You occasionally see them for sale, I would recommend one over just about all the other small animals you see for sale.

I'd love to get one for a pet, but unfortunately, they're illegal in NY.

You can find them for sale online once in a while, but shipping for mammals is a LOT more expensive than shipping inverts or herps.

I like opossums too! When I was a kid I used to hand feed wild ones in my yard. They used to eat our cats' food. Then one day I decided to try to hand feed them. I could feel their sharp teeth, but they were very gentle, the way my cat would be if I hand fed it. Some were aggressive though. I think it was mostly the smaller ones that were easier to tame, which makes sense.
